LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Athletics achieved its highest-ever finish in the PacWest Conference Commissioners' Cup standings following the 2018-19 athletic year. Biola's combined finishes across its 15 sponsored PacWest Conference sports equated to a fourth-place finish in the annual competition among the 12 PacWest institutions.

Biola and Holy Names are the only two institutions in the conference to sponsor all 15 countable sports. The Eagles scored an average of 8.54 points-per-sport to finish fourth behind Azusa Pacific (12.9), Point Loma (11.3) and Concordia Irvine (9.8). Biola finished just a hair in front of another former Golden State Athletic Conference school, Fresno Pacific (8.45). The Eagles accumulated the second-highest total points, 128.2.

BU increased its average finish from the 2017-18 season, moving from 7.7667 last year to 8.5447 this season. Biola was eighth one year ago and fourth this go-around. The points are awarded most to least based off conference finish. Then all scores are added up and divided by the total number of sports sponsored to come to the average, which determines the winner of the award. Men's Cross Country (15) had the Eagles' highest single-sport point total - winning the institution's first-ever PacWest Championship this year.

The Eagles stood in third place after the fall season and again third place after the winter season and dropped behind Concordia Irvine after the spring season. The Concordia team was powered by a PacWest Championship in softball and solid numbers in tennis and track & field.

Women's Golf brought in the highest number of points among Biola's spring teams. Head Coach Jane Carr's squad used a second-place finish at the PacWest Championships to earn 12 total points.

Head Coach Nikki Udria's Biola Softball team won 28 games and finished fourth in the conference to equate to 11 total points towards the effort. Biola Baseball ended in a tie for fifth place to contribute seven total points.

Azusa Pacific's Commissioners' Cup win is their first. California Baptist (now a member of NCAA Division I's Western Athletic Conference) had won the previous five years.

About the PacWest Commissioner's Cup
The PacWest Commissioner's Cup standings are updated three times a year following the fall, winter and spring seasons. The competition is based upon average finish instead of point totals, a change that occurred prior to the 2009-10 season. Each school's points are totaled and then divided by the number of PacWest athletic programs it offers, giving an overall average finish for the school.

The PacWest Commissioner's Cup Scoring System awards points to schools based on their finishes in conference-sponsored sports. Point totals vary from sport to sport and are based upon the number of schools competing. Regular-season standings are used for baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball, while the results of the conference championships in the sports of cross country, golf and tennis.

When teams are tied in the standings, the points awarded to those positions are added together then distributed evenly among the schools.
