A Win To Begin

Biola beats Ecclesia 6-0 to open NCCAA World Series pool play.

BOTETOURT, Va. --- Biola Softball got off to about as good of a start as imaginable during their first foray at the 2019 National Christian College Athletic Association, winning 6-0 against Ecclesia to open pool play.

The Eagles scored two in the first and two in the second to get off to a very strong start behind Paige Austin, who was throwing a gem. Austin would go five innings and allow just one bloop single to the Royals before handing the ball of to Jennifer Morinishi.

Morinishi was able to enter the game with a 6-0 lead after Biola plated a pair in their half of the fifth inning. Morinishi was able to put up two scoreless inning to get the win secured and drop her ERA just a bit. She had two strikeouts and allowed just one hit.

Tori Apodaca and Areana Ramos paced Biola's offense throughout the day. Apodaca went 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Ramos hit a two-run blast in her second at-bat and went 2-for-4 overall with two runs and two RBI.

The Eagles had nine total hits with six of the nine players in the starting lineup recording at least one base knock. That, paired with three errors from the Ecclesia defense, allowed the Biola offense to be productive throughout.

Meanwhile, Ecclesia managed next to nothing against Austin's A stuff. The Eagles' sophomore hurler racked up 20 swings and misses over her five innings pitched. She had 10 strikeouts, had a stretch of 10 batters retired in a row and never came close to allowing a run.

The victory brought her to 12-6 on the season and allowed Biola to improve to 25-16. It's the Eagles' 15th season with 25 wins or more. Biola continues pool play with a game against Cincinnati Christian later on Wednesday afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. PT first pitch.
