Deja Vu

Biola gets another 6-0 win in game two to stay perfect.

BOTETOURT, Va. --- Biola Softball produced early and often to work its way to a relatively stress-free win in game two of pool play at the National Christian College Athletic Association World Series.

The Eagles pushed across one in the first, one in the second and two in both the third and fourth innings to put up the bulk of its production in a 6-0 win over Cincinnati Christian. The win helps Biola control its own destiny headed into the final day of pool play with a 2-0 record.

For the first time this season Head Coach Nikki Udria chose to start Paige Austin in back-to-back ballgames on the same day. The move paid off as Austin held the other Eagles off the board with three dominant innings. She ends the day with eight scoreless innings, two hits allowed and 17 total strikeouts.

Ruth Munoz was the perfect spark plug to begin the game for BU. The sophomore got plunked on the second pitch of her at-bat, stole second base, advanced to third on an Areana Ramos single and then came around to open the game's scoring on a Kayla Neff sacrifice fly.

Andi Hormel began the action for Biola in the top of the second, hitting a one-out single and eventually scoring on a Haley Martinez single and CCU error.

The offense was amplified as the game rolled into its middle innings thanks in large part to the same contributors. Hormel drove the scoring in the third as she stepped into a pitch and drove a two-run single into the left-center field gap. Munoz scored the first run of the fourth by walking and later taking advantage of another CCU error.

The sixth run came across in the very next at-bat as Kayla Neff picked up her first hit of the day and drove in Ramos.

With the six runs on the board Udria decided it was time for Austin to take a break. Cincinnati Christian found a way to get three runners on base with no outs in their half of the fourth, so Udria made another change and brought in Paula Damas.

Damas got back-to-back strikeouts looking and then induced a weak ground ball to first base to end the inning and keep CCU off the board. The junior bulldog went out and put up three more scoreless innings to send Biola to Olive Garden hungry and happy.

Ramos and Hormel both finished the game with two hits. Hormel had a whale of a ballgame, going 2-for-3, reaching on the 34th hit-by-pitch of her career, driving in two and scoring a run of her own. Munoz scored twice and Neff had two RBI to add their names to the list of players involved with multiple scoring plays.

With the win BU improves to 26-16 on the season and looks ahead to its matchup with Judson to end pool play on Thursday. The Eagles and Eagles are scheduled to play at 7 a.m. PT on Thursday. The games will be live streamed at https://thenccaa.org/tournaments/?id=486&path=network.
