James, Ramos Named All-PacWest

Derek James and Edwyn Ramos earn the first individual All-PacWest honors for Biola Men’s Tennis with their third team selections.

April 17, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After helping the Biola Eagles to nine regular season wins and a very competitive run through PacWest play, Biola Men's Tennis members Derek James and Edwyn Ramos were named to the All-PacWest Third Team on Wednesday night at the PacWest Championships Banquet in Surprise, Arizona.

These are the first individual all-conference recognitions for either of Biola's tennis programs in Biola's NCAA DII era.

Ramos made a huge contribution to the Eagles this season by stepping into Biola's No. 1 singles position as a freshman. The Sydney, Australia native won five matches and went 4-1 with four unfinished matches in Biola's nine wins this season. Ramos' honor focused primarily on his singles play, but he also had a team-best 11-6 record in doubles contests during the regular season and went 8-3 at the No. 3 doubles position.

James had a stellar season at the No. 3 singles position and earned his first all-conference honor after going 11-0 at that flight during the regular season. The junior started the season with an 8-0 record and won six-straight singles contests from March 4 to March 18. He also went 3-1 against PacWest opponents with three unfinished matches and dropped just eight sets in 19 matches. James's 12 singles win were the most on the team this season and the most by any player since James' freshman year when he won Biola Newcomer of the Year for his 13 singles wins.

The Eagles are primed to make another run at the PacWest Championships for the second year in a row and take on Hawaii Holi on Thursday at 9 a.m. to kick off the tournament.
