Lee Victorious In Superbreaker

Lauren Lee’s 12-10 victory in a superbreaker concludes Biola’s day in Santa Barbara.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Biola traveled to Santa Barbara on Thursday to face longtime peer Westmont College for the 15th-straight season and came up short by a score of 7-2.

Doubles play started first for the teams as the men's match was nearing its conclusion and the Eagles tied the NAIA No. 12-ranked Warriors briefly at 1-1 after Ines Diaz and Allison Torres won their match 8-3 to improve to 6-4 on the year at the No. 3 position. But the GSAC regular season champions bounced right back by winning each of the next decisions to clinch the match with seven points.

Both Esther Lee and Ines Diaz forced their opponent to win seven games in a set, and E. Lee pushed her first set to a tiebreaker before having to retire. Madison Swaney also worked hard to get back in her singles match at No. 4 singles and sent her match to a superbreak with a 6-4 win in the second set. But Emily Peterson took control of the momentum in the breaker and won 10-5.

But Biola's fortunes in the superbreaker would turn around pretty quickly as Lauren Lee came out on top of a very close match with Rachal Jackson at No. 5 singles. The women traded 6-3 wins in the first two sets to send the match to the superbreaker and L. Lee was ready to answer the bell in the same way she has done previously this season. The Clovis, California-native started Thursday with a 1-0 record in matches that go beyond two sets and won the only tiebreak she played this year in doubles with Esther Lee.

That experience helped carry L. Lee to a 12-10 victory in the superbreaker to earn her eighth singles victory of the season and her fifth in the last eight matches.

The Eagles will have Friday to prepare for their last regular season match of the year. Biola will host another former GSAC peer in Arizona Christian on Saturday at 12 p.m.
