LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Academy of Art finally gets to come to Eagles Diamond for the first time today after heavy rain forced the teams away from La Mirada a year ago.
The teams were forced to play their four-game series on the turf field The Master's University in Santa Clarita last April. robbing the Eagles of their home-field advantage in what turned out to be a series split at two games apiece. Another split is just what Biola is hoping to avoid this weekend as they've already split two PacWest series at home this season and came away from last week's set with Fresno Pacific believing they could have won all four.
If the Eagles are hoping to win the series against the Urban Knights this weekend, the success story has to begin with the offense that continues to be one of the best in the conference. The Eagles are still averaging seven runs per contest 32 games into the season and rank third in the PacWest in extra-base hits, runs scored, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. They also carry a streak of 14-consecutive games with a homerun and non was bigger that the walkoff two-run homerun in extra innings from
Connor Kostecka to win the final game. After that roundtripper, eight men now have multiple homeruns this season for Biola and seven of those players also have 10 or more walks this season.
But even with all the fireworks, the Eagles also got great pitching last weekend against Fresno Pacific and just needs to keep plugging away to get rewarded.
Brayden Englert is coming off his second PacWest Freshman of the Week award after pitching seven innings of two-run ball while
Troy Stainbrook,
Kenny Carrillo and had their own versions of great starts. Sophomore
Anthony Villegas will pick up the baton today with his 3.73 ERA and .209 batting average against to make his first start of the year in search of his fifth win.
