FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola Track & Field continued its season by splitting squads between CSU Fullerton's Ben Brown Invitational and the Oxy Distance Carnival this weekend.
Nathaniel Belden was the highlight of the week, setting a new school record in the men's 110m hurdles.
Just a week after setting a new PR in the event, Belden dropped almost 20-hundredths of a second to beat a seven-year-old school record held by Marc Opena. Belden went :15.04 at CSUF to finish seventh overall in the event.
His seventh-place mark was the second-highest individual finish Biola would have at that meet. Hannah Hubbard and Sarah Prystupa both earned fifth-place finishes to claim the top finishes.
Hubbard lept 5.37m in the long jump to finish fifth and Prystupa cleared 3.55m in the pole vault to earn her fifth-place finish.
There were 'A' and 'B' fields at the Ben Brown Invitational and Biola's student-athletes experienced quite a bit of success in some of the 'B' events. Sarah Rossiter won the 100m dash with a personal-best of :12.65 and Mathias Davis won the 'B' men's 400m with the freshman's season-best time of :50.11.
Kelly Kobayashi also had some success in the 'B' discus, finishing second with her season-best toss of 30.91m. In the 'A' version of that event, Anna Maumalanga was the Eagles' top finisher, placing 14th with a 37.08m.
Maumalanga was one of two Eagles to finish in the to-15 in shot put. Maumalanga was 11th overall with a 11.15m, while Kylia Van Horn had a season-best of 0.21m, placing 14th with a toss of 10.49m.
Jonathan Newsome had a strong week, improving by about three seconds in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of :58.45, finishing 19th.
There were several women's events on the day that saw multiple Eagles finish high on the leaderboard. Among them were two events featuring Heidi Sowers and Sarah Ann Frank. Sowers placed eighth in the 400m hurdles (1:06.44), with Frank coming up 12th (1:08.10). Then the two flip-flopped in the 100m hurdles with Frank placing 14th (:15.64) and Sowers 15th (:15.86).
Biola's women also had a top-5 relay with Megan McSheffrey, Tiffany Pinkevich, Hannah Hollenbeck and Amelia DeYoung combing to go 4:18.58 in the 4x400m relay.
Over at Oxy, Biola had a small group of mostly distance runner make a significant impact. Luke Sutherland had the highest individual finish, placing 11th in the men's 800m (1:57.85). It was his first run of the 800m this season.
Shelby Rogers (800m - 13th - 2:20.76), Taylor Lawsen (10k - 11th - 41:37.09) and Hayden Barron (steeplechase - 12th - 12:46.25) also managed top-15 marks. It was a 10k PR for Lawsen by just about an entire minute. It was Barron's first steeplechase run of the new year. She's off to a great start as a runner after years of playing water polo at CSUMB.
The Eagles had three ladies grouped close together inside of the top-40 in the women's 5k, which featured over 150 runners. Mackenna Mason led the way with a 35th-place finish and time of 18:01.59. She was followed by Emily Ransom (37th - 18:04.57) and Micaela Pulliam (38th - 18:07.33). Pulliam was the first of four Biola finishers that all ran personal-bests in the 5k, which also included Kaili Waller, Mandy Reyes and Clara Haynes.
Ryan Thompson paced Biola's men's effort in the 5,000m, finishing 50th of 237 with a time of 15:05.90.
Biola gets back in action next Saturday at Point Loma in the annual Ross & Sharon Irwin collegiate scoring meet.
