Beemer’s Screamer The Game-Winner

Biola splits the series with Holy Names by winning the seven-inning contest with two three-run innings.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Third base coach Garrett Trevino was hyped returned to the Biola dugout during a Holy Names pitching change in game two. "Where's the little guy!? Where's the little guy!?," Trevino shouted as he found sophomore Cole Beemer at the far corner of the dugout and firmly shook Beemer by the shoulders to celebrate Beemer's massive contribution in the sixth inning to give Biola the late lead.

After Andrew Buglino doubled to leadoff the inning in a 3-3 game, Beemer belted a 1-0 fastball to the base of the wall in straightaway center to plate Buglino and take the lead back for the home team after Holy Names had score three runs in the previous two innings. Then Beemer hustled around third on a single to third by Brandon Cody to give the Eagles some insurance on the way to a 6-3 victory in the series finale.

The win would give Head Coach Justin Duarte's group a split for the day and a split in the four-game set after Holy Names took the first day on Saturday by the same score of 6-3. The Eagles are now 11-6, 5-3 PacWest after the tough conference series and will head to San Diego next week to play four against Point Loma for their next challenge.

The Eagles' win started with four strong, shutout innings from left-hander Dallas Burk in his first home start of the year. Burk struck out four in the contest and retired 12 in a row from the first through the fourth inning. He allowed just two hits and two free passes before exiting after 64 pitches and with the lead in the fifth.

Unfortunately, the Hawks rallied to score a run against Josh Ludeman in the sixth to tie the score and hand Burk a no decision. But Ludeman quickly made up for it when he induced a double-play ball with the bases loaded and one out to get out of the frame without further damage.

That set the stage for Beemer to play his leading role in Biola's second three-run inning of the game. As he did in the three-run third with a two-run double, Jerron Largusa drove in another run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly for his third RBI of the day and conclude another great week for the senior left-fielder. Largusa collected seven RBI's during the series against the Hawks and haw now recorded at least one hit in all eight of Biola's PacWest game over the past two weeks to start the conference schedule.

In game one, Largusa and six of his teammates collected hits and hit Holy Names starter Garrett O' Callaghan for three runs after four innings. Brandon Cody led off the game with a solo homerun to tie the score at 1-1 on O'Callaghan's third pitch of the game. Tyler Piston also collected two hits in his first start of the year and drove in Biola's third run of the game with a two-out single that made it 4-3. But the Hawks held on for the 6-3 win after holding Biola scoreless for the final five innings and scoring in each of the first three innings against starter Troy Stainbrook. Stainbrook struckout three and was only tagged for one earned run in four innings but had trouble putting a string of outs together.

He was relieved by sophomore Anthony Villegas, who had another strong outing as a long relief man. Villegas struckout seven over five innings of work and only threw 66 pitches. He walked just one and bridged the Eagles' bullpen so that all hands were on-deck for the pivotal series finale. The La Mirada, California-native now has a 1.74 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 10.1 innings of work in conference games this season.

The Eagles will travel to San Diego on Friday for the first of two doubleheaders with the Sea Lions. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
