Collins Opens The Floodgates

Jackson Collins’ solo homerun to give Biola the lead was just what the Eagles needed to split Friday’s DH with Point Loma.

SAN DIEGO --- Since the Eagles joined the PacWest last year, Biola Baseball and Point Loma have developed a short history of close baseball games.

Every installment of last year's four-game set, which the teams split two games apiece, was decided by two runs or fewer, as was the first game of Friday's doubleheader which went to the Sea Lions by a score of 6-4.

Things basically stayed on that razor's edge in game two with Biola starter Larson Kindreich beginning his start with three no-hit innings and each side managing just a single run through the first six innings. But a solo homerun from Jackson Collins in the seventh turned the tides for Biola and led to a 6-1 win to conclude the day and split the doubleheader.

The Eagles improve to 12-7 on the year and 6-4 in PacWest play after the win, which hands Point Loma its second conference loss and drops the Sea Lions to 3-2 in PacWest play.

The first game was one the Eagles will look back on as one that got away. Andrew Buglino had a great day at the plate while Troy Stainbrook rolled through five innings to help Biola to a 4-2 lead after five and a half.

But the Sea Lions tied the game with three hits from the first four batters in the bottom of the sixth and then took the 5-4 lead on a grounder up the middle after Stainbrook had exited the game.

Despite having two runners on in both the seventh and ninth innings, the Eagles were unable to tie the score against Point Loma's relievers. Sea Lions ace Zach Noll gave up four runs and six hits over six innings, and surrended a 2-for-2 day with a sacrifice fly to Buglino, but was bailed out by his offense for the gift win. Buglino led Biola with two RBI's in game one and was one of two hitters who had multiple hits. RJ Bates had three hits, including an RBI double in the fifth that gave Biola a 3-2 lead.

Bates repeated that accomplishment in the first inning of game two, as his double down the left-field line scored RobertAnthony Cruz and gave Larson Kindreich a 1-0 lead before he even took the mound.

Friday's start was another step in the freshman's development of becoming a No. 1 in his own right because Kindreich followed his three no-hit innings with a dance on a tight-rope in the fifth that kept the game tied. L. Kindreich showed no signs of being rattled from losing his no-hitter. After Micah Pries doubled to start the fourth and scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game, L. Kindreich struck out Micah Palos to end the inning.

The lefty face the heart of the Sea Lions order again the next time he took the mound and got out the inning unscathed after having runners on the corners with one out and the bases loaded with two. L. Kindreich got his sixth strikeout of the game in the fifth and reached that number for the third-straight start against PacWest opponents. He's also allowed four hits or fewer in all six of his appearances this season.

Following Kindreich, Kenny Carillo spun and painted his way to four innings of one-hit ball to earn the win. After retiring the side in order in his first inning of work, Carillo escaped a jam with two men on and no outs by inducing a double-play ball and getting a swinging strikeout to hold what was a 2-1 lead. Carillo didn't allow a hit over the final two innings and retired the last five men he faced to close things out.

Carillo wouldn't have been able to be as aggressive as he was had not the offense provided insurance in the eighth. Collins got in the act again with a single up the middle. But it was Joey Magro who really broke the game open with a two-run single for his only hit of the game. Magro made it 5-1 with his 10th and 11th RBI's of the season.

Jerron Largusa is up to 19 RBI's and 25 hits after driving one in and collecting three hits in the win. He was one of four Eagles with a multi-hit game and has pushed his hitting streak to 10 games headed into Sunday's doubleheader.

The Eagles will return to San Diego for 12 noon Sunday to play the first game of another doubleheader.
