BLT Goes Back-To-Back

Biola Women’s Tennis gets excellent performances from its entire lineup to earn its second win in as many days.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- You wouldn't know the Biola Eagles still weren't playing with their roster at full strength and were coming off a three-and-a-half hour battle with the way they played against Lewis-Clark State on Tuesday.

The Eagles No. 1 doubles play opened the match against the Warriors with a commanding 6-1 victory and was picked up by more stellar play in singles to earn Biola a 4-2 in the dual match with LCSC. Sophomore Madison Swaney clinched the win her first singles victory of the season as her team climbed back to .500 with a record of 7-7.

Lewis-Clark State was rated the No. 22-ranked NAIA women's tennis team on Tuesday morning and got off to a good start at Biola by winning doubles No. 2 and No. 3 to take the opening 1-0 lead. But that occured after Esther Lee and Lauren Lee powered their way to a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

E. Lee/L. Lee basically handed everything the Warriors could send their way and punished a few balls with strong play around the service boxes. And all the duo's success clicked together at one particular point when they were up 4-1 in the set and Esther Lee coolly volleyed a sharp forehand hit right to her body back over the net to keep the point alive and then buried a winner right down center court to bring the Eagles within one point of their eventual break.

Shortly thereafter, E. Lee ran into some arm discomfort that forced her to retire from her match at No. 1 singles. But Head Coach David Goodman's group covered for the second point they loss very nicely. The Eagles won the first set up two breaks on four of the five remaining courts to take control of singles play and never looked back; all four women who took their first set closed in straights for the victory.

Despite her dealing with a cough, Allison Torres shook hands first with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 to collect her fourth singles win of the year. Then Lauren Lee closed out a few minutes later with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court five to push her to 6-4 in singles this season while tying the dual match at 2-2.

Those two wins put all the attention on the near courts to the shade awning at the Biola Tennis Center. On court two, Ines Diaz had another excellent close to her match in a 6-3, 6-2 decision that sustains the great run the Spaniard has had lately at home. Diaz has now won three of her last four singles matches at the BTC after Tuesday's win and demonstrated encouraging mental toughness on Thursday, quickly overcoming the odd unforced errors with continued attacks via her ground game and making a number of correct decisions to move inside the baseline for winners.

While Diaz was completing her second-set, Lily Waterhouse replicated Monday's winning performance against Hawaii Hilo with an inspired second set against Laura Diaz that any momentum the Warriors had to try to win the match.

Waterhouse made an excellent game-plan adjustment between sets after dropping the first 6-2 and successfully countered Diaz' constant push to the net by deliberately hitting her groundstrokes so Diaz had to stay behind the baseline. Diaz was unable to counter-back and Waterhouse's roll was stopped only by a win by her teammate on the adjacent court.

The entire Biola women's tennis team was all smiles for Swaney after the match since the win a step in Swaney's return to form after recovering from injury to start the season. During the entire course of her straight-set win, Swaney transitioned seamlessly from defensive tennis to attack and was almost automatic at the net when she stepped in for overhand smashes. The 6-3, 6-2 mark is the first win in three singles matches this season for Swaney and is the first time she has clinched a win for Biola.

The Eagles will look to move back over .500 when they travel to San Marcos to conclude the week with a match at Saint Katherine. First serve on Friday is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
