Eagles Escape Close First Game

Biola scores two in the fifth to key narrow game one win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball opened up its four-game set with Chaminade with some good vibes on Monday as it took a 3-2 victory in game one. Biola scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to overcome a late Chaminade rally and nine runners left on base.

Paula Damas went the distance in her 10th start of the season to earn her fifth win of the year. She was effective all day, only running up against serious trouble in two separate innings. The junior induces 10 groundouts, eight flyouts en route to the complete game victory.

Chaminade managed single runs in the fourth and sixth, but Damas was able to keep Chaminade from tying the game up by stranding runners at first and second to finish the sixth. She then set the Silverswords down in order in the sixth to close the book on the game.

The final out was a strikeout on a pitch that hit the batter. The umpire ruled the hitter out because she leaned over the plate. The Chaminade coaching staff is protesting the ending of the game. If any updates or changes are warranted we will announce them on this site.

Biola began the game behind 1-0 and was frustrated at the plate as it continued to produce hits but could not scratch out runs. The Eagles had six hits and stranded four runners before they managed to tie the game when Sicili Brittingham scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.

Brittingham was part of a trio of Biola batters to record three hits in the game. She was joined by Kayla Neff and Hailey Boyett who were hitting 1-2 in the lineup in this one. Those three batters were also the three run scorers in the game, with Neff and Boyett touching the plate in the fifth.

Neff reached base on a leadoff walk that inning and came around to score when Boyett doubled. Boyett scored what would be the game-winning run when with two outs Brittingham hit one through the hole on the left side.

The win improves Biola to 13-10 overall and 8-5 in PacWest play. The loss drops Chaminade to 10-20 overall and 7-16 in conference play. The two finish this first doubleheader at 6:20 p.m. on Monday before playing two more at Biola on Tuesday.
