Boyett Blast Sparks Big Win

Biola wins 11-0 in a run-rule shortened game at Freedom Field.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After getting runners on and struggling to get them all the way across in game one, Monday's game two was a completely different story for Biola Softball as the Eagles scored 11 runs in four innings and stranded just four runners. The 11 runs helped Biola to a run-rule victory over Chaminade, 11-0, and secured a doubleheader sweep.

Chaminade managed a runner in scoring position in each of their five offensive innings but could not scratch a single run across against the combination of Kaile Chavez and Jennifer Morinishi in the circle. Chavez started the game and went an inning-plus before Head Coach Nikki Udria turned to the freshman Morinishi who would end up as the game's winning pitcher. Morinishi went four scoreless and held the Silverswords to just four hits while striking out four.

Biola scored two in the first, five in the third and four in the fourth to earn enough runs to end the game early. Hailey Boyett's third homer of the season is what started the scoring in the bottom of the first, with the Eagles once again profiting from Udria putting her biggest boppers 1-2-3 in the lineup.

The lead doubled three batters later when Missy Poti drove in Areana Ramos, who singled earlier in the inning. All this offense came with just one out and the Eagles were threatening for more right out of the gate with two more runners on. But a hard-hit line drive turned into a quick inning-ending double play helping Chaminade keep it close for just a moment.

Biola got two runners on in the second, but it wouldn't be until the bottom of the third when they'd extend the lead yet again - this time in a big way.

The first four batters of that inning all reached base, culminating in a Caitlin Fowble RBI single that ballooned the lead to 4-0. The freshman would steal second to set up a second and third opportunity for pinch hitter Kylie Velasco. Velasco would drive in one more with a single before an Andi Hormel batted ball brought Fowble across home plate and made it 6-0.

The final bit of damage was done when Boyett's single brought Hormel to home plate with the third two-out run of the inning. Kayla Neff represented the fourth two-out run and eighth run of the game for BU, but she was caught in a rundown between third and home and was retired for the final out of the inning leaving some work to be done in the fourth.

After Areana Ramos made an incredible diving catch to end the top half of the fourth inning she was due up to start to bottom half for BU and she set the tone immediately with a first-pitch single to right field. She, Poti and Fowble would all single and come through to score in the inning, setting the Eagles up to end the game with Mornishi's strong inning in the fifth.

The Eagles had 14 hits in the second game, which is their second-best single game output of the year. It was their third 14-hit game this season and second in as many weeks. Eight different players had at least one hit and the Eagles' 11 runs came from seven different sources.

Ramos led the way with three hits and three runs scored. Poti also had a three-hit game and was right at the center of the run production, scoring twice and driving in two others. Boyett, Fowble and Tori Apodaca all had multi-RBI games.

The win allows Biola to improve to 14-10 overall and 9-5 in PacWest Conference play. Chaminade falls to 10-21 (7-17 PacWest) with its 10th-consecutive loss.

The two teams meet again on Tuesday night for a 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. doubleheader at Freedom Field.
