SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Nathaniel Belden finished just 42 points off his career-high in compiling 6,120 points to WIN the men's decathlon at the 2019 San Diego State Invitational. That huge accomplishment was the highlight of the early weekend down south for Biola Track & Field.

Belden won four of the events (100m, shot put, 110m hurdles and discus) to edge out the second-place decathlete by 29 points. Josh Fry, a senior from Concordia Irvine, took second place and made it close despite winning only one event (pole vault).

Corry Williams was the other Eagle to spend both days out in San Diego competing in the decathlon. He had three top-4 finishes and placed seventh overall with 5,604 points compiled.

Belden was not the only Eagle to win an event this weekend. Freshman Luke Sutherland placed first in the men's 800m with a season-best 1:56.64. Two Biolans ended that event in the top-8 with Nic Nelson placing eighth with a 1:59.57.

Ryan Thompson had the best performance among the distance runners, finishing fifth in the 3,000m invite. He had a career-best 8:35.12, beating his previous top time of 8:41.74.

Anna Maumalanga recorded a top-10 finish for BU, throwing her best shot put at 11.45m to finish ninth overall. She also was top-10 in the discus, finishing seventh thanks to her final toss going 42.92m. Hannah Hubbard was another highlight of the field events for BU. She set her collegiate-best in the long jump recording a mark of 5.47m, good enough for 17th in a field of 39.

Also standing out in the jumps was newcomer Rebeka Preston. Preston's first mark was her best mark, going 10.97m to place eighth overall.

Sarah Prystupa finished eighth of 22 in the women's pole vault with a season-best mark of 3.57m. She was not tripped up until the bar was set a 3.72m, which would have been a career-best.

The women's relays had a strong day with both the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay finishing inside of the top-5. Hannah Hollenbeck, Amelia DeYoung, Sarah Ann Frank and Megan McSheffrey ran a 4:04.78 to place second in the 1,600m event. Sarah Rossiter, Carissa Kalpakjian, Heidi Sowers and Paige Labare went :48.25 to finish fifth in the 400m relay.

Jonathan Newsome and Noah Strenn also managed top-5 finishes of their own. Newsome went :57.29 in the 400m hurdles to finish fourth and set a new season-best. Strenn was at :50.54 in the men's 400m to finish fifth overall. It was a collegiate-best for Strenn, who's a junior for BU.

Sticking with the 400s, Megan McSheffrey had a standout performance in the women's 400m hurdles. The freshman had a nearly two-second season-best with a 1:06.73 to finish eighth overall. McSheffrey was the highest non-NCAA Division I four-year runner in the field.

Joshua Oglesby, competing for the first time this season, finished fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a 10:45.62. He was the top NCAA Division II runner in his field.

The Eagles are back in action next week, once again competing on Thursday and Friday up at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
