LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Baseball would definitely like to use this weekend to makeup for the additional win or two it would have like to have had against Holy Names last week simply because the Eagles were playing at home. The Hawks give away anything easy to Biola and proved last weekend that its earlier series split with Azusa Pacific wasn't a fluke. But Head Coach Justin Duarte's group was still able to mash 15 extra-base hits during the series, including seven doubles in game one of the four-game set, to continue their hot hitting during conference play. The Eagles are averaging over 6.5 runs per game during their eight PacWest games so far this season and have three men who boast 20 hits and a batting average over .300 headed into this weekend's series with Point Loma (RobertAnthony Cruz, Jerron Largusa, Joey Magro).

Largusa finds himself in the top-10 among conference hitters in five offensive categories, including on-base percentage and slugging, while Cruz joins the senior left fielder in a tie for third among hitters with the most doubles with seven. Magro has reached base safely in a team-best 14-straight games and has an active six-game hitting streak to go along with Largusa's eight-gamer.

But with all the offense, the Eagles wins last weekend correlated closest with the pitching performances. Biola won the two games that had the best outings from its starting pitchers against the Hawks, coming from Larson Kindriech and Dallas Burk, with both men hold Holy Names to four hits or fewer. BU is now 8-1 on the year in which it out-hits the opponent and is 7-0 when leading after six innings, so quality starting pitching has been crucial to the Eagles' success. That, and continued dominance out of the pen from Josh Ludeman and Anthony Villegas, who both played key roles in last Saturday's contests against HNU and now possess sub-2.00 ERA's in conference games headed the four-game set with Point Loma.

Point Loma overtook Azusa Pacific for the No. 2 ranking in the West Region by winning three of four games over the Cougars and were listed at No. 17 in the latest national poll. The Sea Lions have six wins against ranked teams and are led by two players in the PacWest's top-10 for batting average and Preseason Conference Player of the Year Micah Pries and a pitching staff that is hold opposing batters to a batting average of .244. Pries already has six homeruns on the year while fellow outfielder Kyle Gracey is carrying a seven-game hitting streak. Jerron Largusa and Joey Magro both had four hits during the Eagles' series with Point Loma last year, as Biola split four games with the Sea Lions at Eagles Diamond. All four games were close and were each decided by two runs or less. The Eagles also scored first in three of the four games of that series and are already 6-3 this year when they are the first team on the scoreboard.
