Biola Tennis Weekly Notes for February 3 through February 9

BTC Hosts Season Opener

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams open their seasons against Hope International on Thursday at the Biola Tennis Center.

February 05, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles Men's and Women's Tennis teams play their first two matches of the season at home on Thursday and Saturday. Both teams will play the Hope International Royals on Thursday afternoon and then return to the Biola Tennis Center on Saturday to host the San Diego Christian Hawks.

Biola will offer live broadcasts of three courts for free on Thursday and Saturday. The live video can be accessed using the "Live Video" links in home matches below.

BIOLA vs HOPE INTERNATIONAL: Thursday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. & 4 p.m.\\ Live Video

WTEN: The Eagles' women's tennis squad will start things off at 2 p.m. on Thursday and will look for continued success at home after defeating the Royals 9-0 at the BTC in 2018. Returners Tinisee Kandakai, Esther Lee and Sarah Morgan all earned straight-set victories in singles matches against HIU a year ago, with Lee cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles in the sweep. That should help the Eagles have a confident edge headed into the match, but the entirely revamped Royals' roster presents a wildcard that the Eagles will have to deal with. Hope International comes in with a record of 0-2.

MTEN: The men's contest against Hope International in 2018 had a few more fireworks and temper flares but the result was similar enough: the Eagles took a team victory on their home court by building an edge in doubles and carrying the momentum into singles for a 7-2 win. The Eagles will bring four new players to this year's matchup and will get to play on their resurfaced courts in a team-scoring atmosphere for the first time. And they'll be looking to continue the home-road splits that come to play in this matchup with the Royals: five of Biola's seven team wins came at home last year while HIU was 0-9 in true road matches.

BIOLA vs SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN: Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. & 1 p.m.\\ Live Video

WTEN: Biola dropped the meeting with the Hawks in 2018 by a score of 8-1 but did have a measure of excitement and success against one of the perennial powers in Golden State Athletic Conference Women's Tennis. The doubles tandem of Tinisee Kandakai and Lily Waterhouse earned their first victory as a pair in the No. 3 match (8-4), while Allison Torres pushed her opponent to a 9-9 tie in the tiebreaker before dropping a close match. Torres came back to win the second set 6-4 in her singles match against Paula Vazquez a year ago before playing the dramatic tiebreak. This will be San Diego Christian's first match of the year

MTEN: The Eagles won two double fixtures and took three total points from the Hawks in last's years match. San Diego Christian went on to earn an 8-8 record on the year and qualify for the NAIA National Tournament. But the Hawks did go 1-4 in true road matches a year ago and lost three seniors from the 2018 roster. This is also the Hawks' first match of the year.
