Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Great Effort, Unfortunate Result

Biola had solid leads at several points but couldn't close the deal against Concordia.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was another night of close, but not quite for this pesky Biola Men's Basketball team. For the second time this season the Eagles came oh, so close to toppling one of the PacWest giants. The first time was a three-point loss to PacWest-leading Point Loma. This night was a 59-52 defeat at the hands of the conference's number two team, Concordia Irvine.

It was a game filled with suffocating defense on both sides that made three-pointers and easy lay-ups few and far between and forced a lot more awkward mid-range jump shots.

Biola had the visiting Eagles right where it wanted them when BU outscored CUI 22-12 over the first 12 minutes of the second half. Biola held a 46-37 lead and were just beginning to really dig in defensively, forcing CUI to miss on seven of their last nine shots in addition to causing a few turnovers with some straight swipes.

Unfortunately for Biola, Concordia's hottest hand of the second half, Austin Clarke, answered Trevor Treinen's layup with a quick three on the other end and avoided momentum going completely in favor of Biola in front of its loud home crowd.

After the Clarke make Concordia held Biola without a field goal for over four minutes until a corner three from Christian Carroll turned the game from a 49-47 CUI lead to a 50-49 Biola advantage with three and change to play. That was the only three-pointer Biola would hit all night.

After the Carroll make Biola would have just one more field goal made the remainder of the game, allowing CUI to end the game on a 10-0 run and escape with a win despite flashes of inability to deal with the Biola defense.

Ken Ammann's team closed halves well. Finishing the second on a 10-0 run and the first on a 13-0 run, which obviously made for a big swing in the game each time.

The first-half run hid a solid half out of Biola's Steve Herve. The senior from Cameroon nearly set a new season-best with his performance in that half alone, recording 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and adding two rebounds and a block before sitting out the whole second half.

Trevor Treinen was the Eagles' highest scorer in the second half (nine points). He was held to 3-of-11 shooting overall though and didn't convert any points in the first half. Herve's 10 was the team-high for Biola this time out.

Biola shot just 35 percent in the game, which is the second-lowest total in a PacWest game during its 2018-19 season. It was also the second time this year that BU was held to one three-point make or fewer.

The tough loss drops Biola to 12-10 (8-8 PacWest) and helps Concordia Irvine move to 18-8 (14-3 PacWest) and remain in second place.

Biola has its final road game of the season this coming Thursday as they travel to Fresno Pacific (9-13, 6-11 PacWest) for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
