Rough Inning Decides It

Biola’s first conference game of the season went relatively well outside of a difficult fourth inning.

HILO, Hawaii --- The Biola Eagles took the early lead and got a great relief appearance from Anthony Villegas in Thursday's series opener against University of Hawaii at Hilo. But a rough fourth inning surrendered four runs to the Vulcans on just one hit and ended up being the difference in a 7-4 loss.

Both teams finish the night with a 4-6 record and Biola starts its conference slate with an 0-1 record.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with two-out production in the third inning from the heart of the order. After the first two batters of the inning were retires, Ryan Gallegos walked and Jerron Largusa singled to set the table for RJ Bates to do damage. Bates lined his third extra-base hit of the year down the left field line to score both his teammates and collect his sixth and seventh RBI on the year.

But Hawaii Hilo evened the score at 2-2 with a double of its own in the third against starter Troy Stainbrook and then added more in the fourth inning when Biola began to struggle.

Stainbook only allowed two hits over his first three innings of work and recorded three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. But the nasty triplets of a walk, error and hit-by-pitch helped the Vulcans score three runs on just one single while Stainbrook was in the game. Hilo added one more on a double-steal when Villegas had entered the game and those four runs would end up being the difference when the dust settled.

Another two-out hit from Largusa, who went 3-for-4 with an HBP, followed by a two-run error off Bates' bat in the fifth made it a two-run game with time left. Then Villegas proceeded to waltz through the next three innings without allowing a run or a hit. But the Eagles would strand seven runners on base over the final four innings, including two each in the six, seventh and eighth, as the offense was unable to mount the comeback.

The Eagles will look to even the series at Wong Stadium on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. Pacific Time.
