Two-Out Magic

Biola earns its first PacWest win of the year in 12 innings over Hawaii Hilo with a ton of two-out production.

HILO, Hawaii --- The Biola Eagles came together as a team on Friday and wouldn't let their second game with University of Hawaii at Hilo slip away. After being down 4-0 with three innings elft to play, the Eagles started a long streak of two-out production and earned a 9-6 comeback win in 12 innings.

Josh Ludeman earned the victory for Biola as Head Coach Justin Duarte's group improves to 5-6, 1-1 PacWest. The Vulcans fall to 4-7, 2-2 PacWest after the conference's premier closer, John Kea, was finally stretched too far and surrendered three runs in his fifth inning of work.

Biola starter Larson Kindreich recorded seven strikeouts in five innings during his first conference start of the year but ran into a little trouble in the third and fifth innings when he started the frames with walks. In the meantime, Kindreich's teammates struggled at the plate in the early parts of the game and only managed three singles for offense in the first six innings.

But the tide of the game completely turned in the seventh inning, when the Vulcans turned to their relievers and coughed up an out after mishandling a catchable ball in foul territory. With family making the trip to Hawaii and watching in the stands, RJ Bates blasted a two-out three-run homerun in the seventh to bring the Eagles within a run.

Hawaii Hilo handed the ball to Kea with confidence that he would close things out and even offered him additional support with an insurance run in the eighth. But a RobertAnthony Cruz sacrifice fly with the bases loaded was followed by a two-out RBI single from Andy Van Antwerp that tied the game and blew Kea's save.

Not to be lost in the Eagles' scramble to send the game to extra innings was the performance from freshman Tyler Mead out of the pen to keep the Vulcans' bats largely at bay during his three innings of work. Mead induced six groundouts and only allowed one run during his outing and continued his streak of not allowing a walk through the first three appearances of his collegiate career.

Both teams would score a run with two outs in the 10th before Kea and Ludeman both threw scoreless frames in the 11th. But then the Vulcans' blinked first in the 12th, as a fielding error on a hard-hit ground ball from Jerron Largusa allowed Connor Kostecka to score the game-winning run before Cruz hit a two-run double for insurance.

Cruz and Bates both had three-RBI nights for Biola while six Eagles had multi-hit games.

Ludeman had a pedestrian one-two-three inning in the bottom of the 12th to win the game for Biola and finished his outing with four flyouts, four groundouts and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to Wong Stadium Saturday with the intention of winning the four-game series. The doubleheader with the Vulcans is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
