Lees Lead Saturday Sweep

Esther and Lauren Lee combine for three points in Biola’s 5-0 sweep of Whittier College at the Biola Tennis Center.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Tennis defeated the Whittier College Poets 5-0 in a meeting between the crosstown rivals at the Biola Tennis Center on Saturday and it was all Eagles from start to finish.

The tandem of Esther Lee and Lauren Lee combined for three of the Eagles' five points on Saturday after they combined for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles to help Biola improve to 2-2 on the year. The Poets drop to 1-3 on the year with the loss.

Strong play from the word "go" carried throughout the dual match for Head Coach David Goodman's group. The Eagles' three doubles flights all held serve and broke the Poets early on during their sets on the way to the initial 1-0 advantage. Esther and Lauren Lee earned their first win of the season as a doubles pair while Anna Hartmann and Lily Waterhouse improve to 2-0 as a team after winning 6-4 at No. 3.

Hartmann takes the team lead for overall wins this season with a combined four in singles and doubles play. She's followed directly by Waterhouse and Alison Torres, who came a game shy of finishing her double match with Ines Diaz at 5-3.

It didn't take long after singles play started to see that the Eagles were in control; all six women took the first set of their respective matches. But Biola took it to another level to close out the match, particularly with the rollover victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 fixtures.

Lauren Lee saw a few games go to deuce in her singles match against Madeline Schmidt-Perez. But Lee didn't drop a single one of those deciding points and rattled off Biola's first win in singles 6-0, 6-0. About 10 minutes thereafter, Sarah Morgan completed her match at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-2 win and it appeared that all eyes would be on Alison Torres to clinch the match since she was already up 5-2 in the second set.

But word got out that Esther Lee had clinched the match just about 30 seconds to a minute after Morgan's victory with a 6-0 bagel in the second set to give Biola its second win of the season. Esther Lee simply locked in during the second set after taking the first 6-4. She played her ground game with power and precision for the entire match and was finally able to put it all together against Kindall Young to win the final seven games of the fixture.

Torres was allowed to finish out one final game to finalize the score at 5-0 and secure her second singles win of the year while Diaz and Waterhouse were just two games away from getting wins of their own.

The Eagles finally get a bit of a break next week before their next competition. Biola's fifth match of the season comes on March 2 at Fresno Pacific.
