Tough Break For Eagles

Biola Women’s Tennis battled Holy Names for three and a half hours but lost a close decision.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- There is no doubt Biola Women's Tennis matched the effort of their opponent and the effort of the Eagles' men's team after the men earned a narrow 4-3 victory at the Meyer Tennis Courts Monday.

The Eagles took the opening 1-0 lead after winning two convincing doubles decision and pushed hard in singles. But Biola ultimately lost the three and a half hour dual match to Holy Names by a score of 4-1.

The duo of Ines Diaz and Allison Toress helped Biola improve to a 5-0 record in No. 3 doubles matches this season and earned the doubles' win that grabbed the first point by a score of 6-1. And shortly after that win continued to underline how impressive the Eagles' depth has been this year, Esther Lee and Lauren Lee jumped to an even 2-2 at No. 1 doubles with a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker that won the doubles point for Biola.

And the depth added strength on Monday especially with the return of Tinisee Kandakai, who made her season debut against the Hawks. Head Coach David Goodman immediately inserted Kandakai into the No. 3 spot in singles and she did not disappoint for her first match out. The Lakewood, California-native pushed her opponents to tiebreakers in both sets before dropping the match 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).

Then the singles matches just continued to wear on as the other five Eagles in singles fixtures dug their heels in. Esther Lee took the first set in the No. 1 flight by a score of 6-2 and nearly won the match when the third set was pushed to a tiebreak. But Lada Baglaeva rallied to break Lee's serve and take the breaker 7-1.

The last match of the night to finish was played by Torres, who took a set like Esther Lee and forced a third set. Unfortunately, Torres and her opponent, Eilis Work, traded 6-2, 2-6 results in sets two and three for Holy Names to clinch the match.

The Eagles will have to turn around for an early start on Tuesday. They head to Rohnert Park to meet up with Sonoma State at 9:30 a.m.
