Near No-No Leads BU To Game 1 Win

Biola Softball got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Adelphi.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball had one of its most complete games of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles rode a tremendous pitching performance from Paige Austin and the hot bat of Caitlin Fowble to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Adelphi Panthers.

Austin went the distance for the Eagles to earn her first complete game shutout win of the season. The sophomore threw 21 first-inning pitches but then was about as economical as you could get for the rest of her winning effort, throwing just 70 pitches over her final six innings of work.

She relied on an error-free defense to support her, rolling 10 groundouts and inducing seven flyouts to go along with four Ks. Austin faced the minimum in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings in a dominant effort.

The sophomore was pitching with the lead from the third inning on thanks to some early scoring manufactured by Head Coach Nikki Udria's shuffled up batting lineup.

The Eagles put a two-spot on the board in the second inning thanks to some well-executed small ball. It was a nice change of pace from the last contest where all of the Eagles' runs came by way of the long ball.

Hailey Boyett, who hit one of those homeruns yesterday, walked to leadoff the second inning. A sacrifice bunt moved her over and she advanced to third on a productive ground out. With two outs in the inning Ruth Munoz managed an RBI double. Munoz would also come around to score on the very next play when freshman Caitlin Fowble managed the first hit of her Biola career to drive in the second run of the game.

Fowble would be productive throughout the opening game, taking full advantage of her first start of the young season. She was 2-for-2, hitting a one-out double and coming around to score in the fifth inning to give the Eagles their third and final run of the game.

"I am super proud of Caitlin. She's been patient and faithful and hasn't gotten as many opportunities as I am sure she'd like," said Udria. "She took advantage of her chance today, though. She went up their hacking and it paid off for her."

Adelphi had one runner in scoring position in the first inning, one in the third inning and one in the sixth inning, but could not capitalize against Austin in any of those chances, stranding five runners throughout the course of the game.

The win moves Biola to 4-7 overall on the season. They have a chance to improve to 5-7 with another win over Adelphi (0-6) in the nightcap.
