Sacrifice Success

Biola gets a game-winning sacrifice fly from Ari Gonzales in support of a Paula Damas win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball pulled its home record up to an even 2-2 and recorded its first doubleheader sweep of the new year with a 3-2 game two win on Saturday at Freedom Field.

"It was great for our team to come out and string some runs together in a way we hadn't really been doing the past few weekends," said Head Coach Nikki Udria. "We had pitching, we had clutch hitting, we had a good day."

Paula Damas followed up a game one gem from Paige Austin with a really quality performance of her own. The junior had a perfect first four innings and did not give up a hit until there was one out in the fifth and an Adelphi batter hit a two-run homer to bring the game back within one.

Damas limited the damage to those two runs in the fifth and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, getting a groundout right back to her to keep the Eagles ahead 3-2. After six, she handed the ball off to Jennifer Morinishi who came in with a somewhat smooth seventh inning to lock down her first collegiate save.

The Panthers had two singles to go with two strikeouts in their half of the seventh, before Morinishi was able to wiggle out of trouble with a lineout to Andi Hormel to end the game at 3-2.

The Eagles got all their scoring at once by putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The inning began with an Adelphi error allowing Haley Martinez to reach. Martinez would score the first run of the game when Hailey Boyett hit an RBI single two batters later.

Boyett's was the first of four-consecutive singles that allowed her spot in the lineup to result in the second run of the game in the form of pinch runner Tori Apodaca. One of those four singles belonged to Kylie Velasco, who became the game's winning run when she touched the plate on an Ari Gonzales one-out sacrifice fly.

It was Gonzales' first sacrifice fly and second RBI of the season and Velasco's team-high seventh run scored.

The Eagles managed six hits in the game, but just like the Panthers it took BU a little while to get the sticks going in the second contest. Biola recorded the first hit of the game for either side in the bottom half of the third inning. The good pitching on both sides saw the advantage ultimately go to Damas and the Eagles.

It was a great win for Damas who had to throw nearly 80 pitches just yesterday in a tough-luck loss at Concordia Irvine. She went the full six innings and allowed only two hits to Adelphi while picking up her third win of the year. She's been locked in as of late, lowering her ERA by almost 10 full points since the team's last home stand.

"Paige and Paula are definitely getting into the groove," said Udria. "We are so happy with Paula. She just grinds. She put yesterday behind her and put up a performance that we can't ask for any better. She kept herself composed and battled back."

Biola was able to get a win in this game despite the fact that none of the hitters top-3 in the lineup registered a hit. Spots four through eight accounted for all six hits with Boyett leading the way with a 2-for-3 afternoon.

The win helps Biola improve to 5-7 overall and set itself up to get back over .500 in its upcoming PacWest NorCal road trip. The Eagles begin that trip on Thursday with the first of two back-to-back doubleheaders at Holy Names. The games are slated to be played at Cottrell Field at St. Mary's College.
