Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Have A Day, Herve

Steve Herve has one of the best nights of his career as Eagles come close to big upset.

LA MIRADA, Calif. ---  Biola Men's Basketball continues to prove it can hang in there with the best the PacWest Conference has to offer. The Eagles are capable of putting in a competitive performance on any given night, just as they did in a tough 84-78 loss to RV Chaminade Thursday night.

Biola was nearly unstoppable throughout the first seven minutes, opening up a 20-7 lead thanks to a 7-for-10 start from the field. Four of those seven makes were from behind the three-point arc, the best stretch of three-point shooting of the season for BU.

Unfortunately for Biola, the Silverswords quickly put thoughts of their 3-for-9 start behind them and went on a 25-8 run between the 13:38 and 4:41 marks in the first half. Head Coach Eric Bovaird's team showed tremendous composure throughout the first half, allowing them to work their way back from the large early deficit.

Chaminade led by five with just over a minute left in the first half, but the Eagles got a dunk from Levi Auble, a steal from Alex Wright and dunk from Steve Herve on the other end to cut it to 38-37 and set up a fantastic final 20 minutes.

The Eagles went seven of eight from three-point range in the first half. They came into the night averaging just 4.8 rebounds-per-game through the first 24 games of the year.

One of the big issues in the second half was that the hot hand from deep disappeared for Biola as it made just one three-pointer in the entire final 20. It was still a weapon for the Silverswords, who made six triples in the second half and 13 total in the game.

Three-point shots accounted for half of the total field goals made for the Silverswords in their 46-point second frame. They got by with just 12 made field goals in the half because they had 23 chances at the free-throw line and converted 16 of them. In contrast, Biola had just six free throw chances the entire game (and went 6-for-6).

The visiting team got out to an 11-4 start to the second half to enable them to extend their lead to nine with just about 15 minutes to play. The Eagles managed to keep the deficit between one and nine points for the remainder of the game, but could never find a tie or the lead in the second half.

The closest the game got was a 72-71 Chaminade lead with 3:36 left on the clock. Herve was the main reason the Eagles managed to get it back to that close. He followed a Nick Anderson three-pointer with a layup-and-one and a steal that resulted in him scoring two more with another bucket in the paint.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Chaminade's Grant Dressler would turn right around and score seven consecutive points to open it back up to 80-71 with 50 seconds left, sucking all the life out of what was an incredible effort from Biola and an overall really enjoyable ball game.

Herve ended the game with a season-high 17 points on an incredibly economical 8-of-10 shooting effort. The big man added six rebounds, a block and a career-best four steals to be the MVP of the night for BU.

Michael Bagatourian and Levi Auble both scored 19 to lead Biola. Dressler had 23 for Chaminade to lead all scorers. For just the second time this season Biola had five players hit double figures, with Trevor Treinen (12) and Alex Wright (11) joining the other three.

Second-chance points were a killer for the Silverswords on Thursday night. They pulled down 10 offensive rebounds and it equated to a 17-4 advantage for them in second-chance scores.

Where Chaminade excelled behind the three-point line, it was the Eagles dominating the painted area. Biola's bigs (and slashing guards) could do seemingly anything they wanted inside all night, posting a 44-26 advantage in points around the basket.

The only problem with that is that two does not quite equal three, so in the end it was fun to watch but just not enough for a statement win.

The tough-luck loss drops Biola to 13-12 (9-10 PacWest), while the Silverswords kept their chances at second place in the conference (and a first-round tournament bye) alive as they improved to 20-5 (14-5 PacWest).

Biola still has three more games left on its season-ending homestand, continuing play with a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Hawaii Pacific (7-18, 4-16 PacWest) this Saturday.
