Watson Blasts A Rainmaker

Caleb Waston’s first collegiate homerun lifts Biola over San Diego Christian in a rain-shortened affair.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With Major League third baseman Josh Donaldson still in the beginnings of spring training, Biola's freshman Caleb Watson decided to lease Donaldson's "Bringer of Rain" nickname for Monday's game against San Diego Christian since the All-Star had no need of it.

Making his first career start behind the plate for Biola, Watson sent the Eagles Diamond crowd into an uproar when he unloaded on a 2-0 inside fastball in the fourth inning and launched it over the left-centerfield fence for a two-run homerun. The no-doubt-about-it shot would coincidently be a "rainmaker" homerun, as the precipitation shortly after Watson's smash forced the umpires to call the game with Biola in the lead ,10-3.

The catcher's homerun provided the difference in a game where Head Coach Justin Duarte's group got off to a much better start than it had in previous wins. After starting pitcher Kenny Carillo stranded two Hawks on base in the top of the first and kept the game scoreless, the Eagles took the early lead with two runs in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error.

Another run in the third and Watson's fourth-inning blast would stake Carillo to a 5-1 lead that would be sufficient support for the junior righty, even with a few good pieces of hitting from San Diego Christian. Carillo pounded the zone from start to finish on Monday, throwing 50 of his 68 pitches for strikes in his five innings of work while collecting 14 first-pitch strikes against opposing hitters.

Carillo retired seven batters in a row between the second and fourth innings and struck out five on the way to his first win of the season. He also never threw more than six pitches to a Hawks batter over his five innings.

After Joey Levitt relieved Carillo and got a strikeout to leave men at first and second, the Eagles score five runs on four hits and four walks in the sixth inning before the game was called. Brandon Cody, Joey Magro and Connor Kostecka strung together three-straight hits during the frame while Largusa and RJ Bates both picked up RBI's on bases loaded walks.

The Eagles now carry a three-game winning streak into their rematch with Hope International on Tuesday. The teams will meet at Amerige Park in Fullerton at 6 p.m.
