Diving In The Downpour

Biola puts up some great swims despite the rain on day two at PCSC.

February 14, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A visit from President Barry Corey is always a special time, but it is made even more special when he comes over in the rain just before the team swims a great night of swims at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference championships.

Biola had a solid day during day two of the annual competition, with both the men and women's team adding about 100 points to their point tally as we're now halfway through the meet.

Thursday's swimming featured the 500-freestyle, 50-freestyle, 200-IM and 200-freestyle relay.

The relay performances went similar to day one with the men's contingent of Matthew Roe, Andrew Holmes, Westin Dawe and Raymond Kam taking fourth (1:28.58) and the women's group of Annie Bristow, Kasidee Pascoe, Rebecca Brandt and Emily Silzel finishing seventh (1:38.16).

Twelve was the magic number for Biola on this day, with three individual finishers placing 12th in their given event. That was three of the top-4 highest finishes of the day for the Eagles. Jonathan Villa had the highest finish of the day, placing seventh in the 500-freestyle. His 4:48.57 was a season-best by just over two seconds.

Holmes was the first 12th-place finisher of the day, going 4:58.40 in the 500-freestyle to earn the mark. It was a three-second personal-best for him.

Silzel was the women's top finisher in the 500-yard race. She completed the course in 5:08.32 (a season-best) to finish 18th.

Faith McAllister had the highest individual women's finish of the day, going 12th in the 200-IM. The freshman carded a time of 2:10.85 to break her previous personal-best by just about a second.

The final 12th-place finisher came on the men's side of the 50-freestyle where Matthew Roe brought in 15 points with his swim of :22.03. Senior Rebecca Brandt and freshman Bristow were the Eagles' top finishers in the women's 50-free with a tied time of :25.12.

The teams get back underway at SPLASH! Aquatic Center at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with prelims day three. Friday's events include: 100-butterfly, 400-IM, 200-freestyle, 100-backstroke, 100-breaststroke, 400-medley relay and some 3-meter diving.
