Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Fresno Finishes Strong

Biola battled back from a big deficit but ended the game giving up a 12-0 run.

FRESNO, Calif. --- When a Steve Herve layup dropped through the iron with 3:57 left in the game and put Biola out ahead by eight points after a 13-4 stretch where Fresno Pacific had absolutely nothing left in the tank, it seemed like the game was in the bag for this resilient Biola bunch.

Unfortunately for Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's Eagles that was not the case on a rainy Thursday night up in Central California. The hosting Sunbirds went on to score the final 12 points of the game, holding BU off the board for the final 237 seconds of play and allowing FPU to break a three-game losing streak with an unlikely 61-57 win.

It was an up and down game all night long, but it's not likely that anyone saw that kind of finish coming after Biola battled all the way back from being down by as much as 14 to take such a commanding lead.

Fresno Pacific controlled play in the first half, getting off to an excellent start and more than doubling up the Eagles at one point, 24-10.

Thankfully for Biola the Sunbirds' hot shooting went cold for a brief stretch near the end of the first half, allowing BU to bring it all the way back to within five points at the halftime break, 30-25.

Then, Biola got off to a quick start to the second half to bring it within one point and make the next 10 minutes of play very interesting. FPU maintained its lead (or settled in a tie) until there was 11 minutes and 40 seconds left to play. That's when a Trevor Treinen three made it 40-39 Biola, giving the visitors their first lead since 2-0.

After that the two teams continually traded the lead back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than one point between the 10:16 mark and the 6:30 mark. It was an Alex Wright three-pointer that finally saw things begin to swing in favor of the Eagles as they grabbed a 51-47 lead at 6:30.

Wright would score three consecutive baskets for BU leading up to Herve's layup that brought Biola its largest lead of the game at 57-49. Not only did Biola outscore the Sunbirds during that time but it also outrebounded the hosts 3-0 and forced two turnovers to put massive pressure on FPU with under four minutes to play.

The next possession saw a deadball signal the final media timeout of the night and whatever FPU coach CJ Haydock said to his team at that timeout lit a fire underneath them that changed the whole tide of the game.

The Eagles would go 0-for-8 over the final three minutes and change and watch as Fresno Pacific stole away a win and kept Biola from the season sweep of the Sunbirds.

Wright would end the game as Biola's leading scorer, shooting 7-for-11 from the field and putting together a 15-point effort. Levi Auble was also 7-for-11 and his 14 points were second-most among Biola players. He accomplished his in just 20 minutes on the floor, though.

The Eagles were once again limited offensively, shooting only nine threes the entire night and making just two of them. Biola won the rebounding battle, shot the ball at a 47 percent clip and had nine steals, but it was not enough to overcome their late cold stretch.

Biola falls back below .500 in PacWest Conference competition with a second-straight loss. The Eagles are now 12-11 (8-9 PacWest), while FPU improves to 10-13 (7-11 PacWest).

Biola now has nothing but home games left on its schedule with five events in Chase Gym over the next two weeks. Catch the Eagles at home against Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
