Still Stellar On Day Two

Biola sets two new records, gets NCAA cuts and has a diving win on day two!

December 07, 2019

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. --- Two more school records fell on day two of the Collegiate Winter Invite. Raymond Kam and Patrick Waggoner each claimed a line in the record book while Biola's depth led to a dominant effort for the Eagles.

Biola had six different individual events where it had three swimmers finish among the top-4 in an eye-popping effort in the finals. The team also saw some great relay finishes, including one men's win and one women's win.

The Eagles continue to lead the meet with a combined 2,973.5 points. Concordia Irvine is second overall with 2603.5. Biola also leads both the men and women's standings individually.

Waggoner was the first to set a record, taking second place in the 400-IM and swimming his record time of 4:08.39 in the finals. His time breaks a record of 4:08.56 set all the way back in 2013.

"It felt great to put up a PR in the 400 IM. I haven't had a PR in over two years in that event," said Waggoner. "Coach Kauth has really pushed me in workouts and my teammates have just brought me to another level. It's really a team sport."

Kam broke his own record, which he set at the very last all-out meet the Eagles swam in, the 2019 Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference Championships. He won the 100-butterfly, one of two wins he had on the day, with a time of :50.54. His old record was :50.55.

The 100-butterfly was one of those marquee events where Biola had three in the top-4. Kam won, Andrew Benson went :52.10 to finish second and Dylan Pon rounded out the effort with a fourth-place mark of :52.67.

Kam's other event win came in the 100-breaststroke. He went :58.44 to set a new season-best by about two seconds. James Gamette went :58.93 to set a personal-best and finish second and Colin Reeve went fourth to score even more for BU (:59.40).

Waggoner didn't win the event he set the record in, but he did earn an individual win for the Eagles when he finished first in the 200-freestyle. His 1:42.84 paced an incredible effort for the guys as they took spots 1-2-3-4. Alexander Ness (1:43.33), Jonas Huckabay (1:44.42) and Gabe Weber (1:44.50) were all also in the mix.

"The team has done great," said Waggoner. "Everyone I've watched and cheered has been putting up times that are blowing away their personal and season bests. Alex Ness was right with me on that 200 free and he's been pushing me in practice since day one. He's having big meet."

The women's team won two individual events in addition to the win in the 800-freestyle relay. Liza Parahnevich won the 400-IM with a 4:29.56, which is inside of the NCAA Qualifying 'B' standard. She paced a group of Eagles that finished first, second and fourth. Katelyn Harper went 4:34.36 to go second and Audrey Vermeulen finished in 4:37.90 to take fourth.

The other win came courtesy Anna Haaksma in the 100-breaststroke. Haaksma PR'd by about a second-and-a-half with a 1:07.37 to win the race. Celine Dong (1:07.48) finished second and Meredyth Rubie (1:10.73) came in fourth.

Just like it was for the guys, the 200-freestyle was a good event for the ladies. Biola took second, third and fourth to help the total point effort. Again Hayes (1:55.54) and Parahnevich (1:55.57) were right in the mix, with Kasidee Pascoe finishing fourth (1:56.64).

The women also got top-3 finishes from Nicole Chang in the 100-butterfly (3rd - :59.28) and 100-backstroke (2nd - :58.95).

In addition to the great swims, Biola's divers made a big impact on Saturday. Ashley Vitale won the women's 1-meter board with a 214.20. Chloe Hartman also finished top-5.

"The entire team has been great, pushing each other on and off the pool deck," said Waggoner.

The meet finishes off on Sunday following a similar schedule to both of the first days with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. The results are live at the Meet Mobile App.
