Counters Come Up Empty

JD Gunn makes nine saves on Thursday, but Concordia ends up with two goals on 23 shots to win.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola Men's Soccer looked quite dangerous and capable in the pace of play during Thursday's road match against Concordia University Irvine. Head Coach Todd Elkins' group made a number of good counterattack and passes upfield to sprinting attackers that did not make the final box score.

But the Eagles were not able to connect on the final through-balls they needed to get a goal on the scoreboard so CUI took three PacWest points after scoring two second-half goals. Biola will head into its senior-day match next week with a 4-3-2 PacWest record while Concordia moves to 6-2 in PacWest play after collecting its third-straight win.

Biola went into halftime with a strong defensive showing that resulted in a scoreless tie after 45 minutes. The visiting Eagles successfully neutralized three corner kicks drawn by Concordia before the 17th minute. And Gunn made two saves in a four-minute span to help neutralize the threat.

Led by shots in back-to-back minutes from Alex Lugo, BU tried to find an opening in response after Concordia was quieted midway through the first half. But the CUI backline stood up every attacker and did not need goalkeeper Mac Hutchins to make a save during the first half of play.

Gunn still stayed sharp in goal for Biola once the second half finally got underway. The redshirt freshman recorded two more quick stops in the first seven minutes of the period and finished the match with eight saves. But Concordia was finally able to break through with its sheer quantity of shots, scoring the first goal of the match in the 68th on CUI's 15th attempt of the match and sixth of the half.

Caley Powers then netted his seventh goal of the year and second against Biola in the 83rd minute to give Concordia its 2-0 lead.

This is the third time in the past four matches that Gunn has made six saves or more in a match after reaching that mark only once in the first 12 contests of the season. He'll look to get back on a winning track with his team when they return to Al Barbour Field next week to defend their two-match home winning streak.

The Eagles will host Point Loma on November 13 at 7 p.m. and will celebrate their seniors before the match.
