Weekly Notes for Women's Soccer November 3 to November 9

Clashes With Cougars and Concordia

Biola Women’s Soccer takes its impressive undefeated streak into Azusa and Irvine this week.

November 04, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif.
--- This past week Biola Women's Soccer was ranked No. 6 in the NCAA West Region ranking, improved to 7-0 in conference play with two shutouts and saw underclassmen score its last five goals, including the last three by freshman. But the Eagles will be more motivated than ever this week as they head into two road matches against longtime rivals.

Ten Cornerstone Cup points are on the line in Tuesday's matchup against Azusa Pacific, and the Eagles will be looking to earn a victory in the Cornerstone Cup-era for the first time. Then they'll look to add another big line to their postseason resume against a Concordia team that will come into the match with an undefeated conference record.

A lot of attention has been given to the massive differential Biola has built in shots on goal and corner kicks against its conference opponents. But the Eagles have found a rhythm in their attack over the past few weeks that has resulted in multiple-goal outputs in four of the last five matches. Katelyn Penner has led the Eagles in scoring over that stretch with three goals that all turned out to be game-winners. And two more freshmen have also found the back of the net with forwards Christine Goodman and Mason Stansberry each scoring their first collegiate goal last week. Positive signs are continuing to build for Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group. But the Eagles need to continue developing their "A-game" and bring their best to the pitch with four regular season matches remaining and a conference championship still in reach.

BIOLA (10-3-1, 7-0 PacWest) at Azusa Pacific (7-5-1, 3-3-1 PacWest): Tuesday Nov. 5 at 5 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
Tuesday's battle in Azusa will be the Eagles first road match in over three weeks, but it will finally give Biola a chance to build upon its four-match road winning streak. Since the Cougars shocked Point Loma with a 1-0 non-conference win on September 26, Azusa Pacific's results have basically correlated with the Cougars' ability to score multiple goals. APU is 3-0 when its has scored multiple times in the eight matches since September 26, including a 2-1 victory over Chaminade this past Saturday. But the Cougars are 0-4-1 over the same stretch when they scored one goal or fewer.

APU has a core group of scorers, with five women combining for 18 of Azusa Pacific's 21 goals. And those attackers have typically found their success by peppering the goal with as many shots as they can until the ball crosses the goal line. The Cougars averaged over 21 shots per contest over their last three wins and averaged over 20 shots in their last three matches as they went 2-0-1 against the Hawaii schools at home.

By comparison, the Eagles have surrendered just over six shots a match over their last three contests and have only allowed nine shots or fewer in seven of the nine matches they've played against PacWest opponents. Tuesday's match will also count for 10 points toward this year's Cornerstone Cup if one team wins or five points a piece if the teams draw. Biola currently leads the Cornerstone Cup 20 points to five thanks to the men's and women's cross country teams' performances at the PacWest Championship.

BIOLA (10-3-1, 7-0 PacWest) at Concordia (8-3-2, 6-0-1 PacWest): Thursday Nov. 7 at 12 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
Biola played one of its best matches of the season in the non-conference game against Concordia, holding the visiting team to one shot on goal and one corner kick in a 1-0 shutout victory. But CUI has quickly turned things around since losing to Biola. The Eagles in green and gold have gone 6-0-1 since and have scored multiple goals in all seven of those matches.

Freshman Jadenn Carillo has been a big part of that success in her return to the lineup after missing the Biola match. Carillo has recorded five goals and an assist in the last seven matches and her teammates have responded to her presence with goals of their own. Eight different women have scored for Concordia in its last three matches as CUI matches Biola's 3-0 record against the Hawaii schools. But Biola knows what it needs to do to win against Concordia, having posted a 2-0-1 record over the last three matches with 3-2 and 1-0 victories.

Coach Brunelle's group will still need to make sure it plays sharp from the outset, though. Concordia scored two first-half goals in the teams' last meeting in Irvine and it took two second-half strikes from Sarah Jeffries to put Biola in a position to earn a 3-3 draw. A win in Irvine would be Biola's first road win at CUI since 2012 and would spoil the Green and Gold's unblemished home record in 2019.
