Game Recap: Volleyball |

Winslow Gets 1k, Seniors Shine!

Biola Volleyball has another supremely enjoyable senior day.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Headed into the third set of Saturday's 3-0 (25-12; 25-18; 25-13) win over Notre Dame de Namur every member of the Biola Volleyball team turned their attention to one, singular thing -- getting good sets to Sabrina Winslow.

The senior, playing the final match of her collegiate career, entered that final game six kills shy of 1,000 in her four-year career (one at Fresno State, three at Biola). Winslow began that third set with three kills in Biola's first four points and seemed well on her way to 1k.

It began to look dicey for just a bit when the Eagles kept getting points on service aces and NDNU errors and all of a sudden led 19-11 and she still had two kills to get.

It was getting more and more difficult to get those kills, too, because every single soul in Chase Gym knew that any time the ball was on the Biola side of the net it was going straight to the senior outside.

Finally, she hit two in a row for the Eagles to make it 21-12 in that decisive final set and bring her career to a close at exactly 1,000. She had 904 of those at Biola and 96 in her freshman year for the Bulldogs.

"I was impressed with the secret plan Vanessa hatched to be sure she set Sabrina just enough times to get her to 1,000 kills," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer.

That milestone was one of many memorable and exciting moments for the Eagles' quartet of seniors on their special day.

"I think this is a great group of impactful seniors. It's not all about volleyball all the time," said Seltzer. "It's about relationships and loving other people and they exemplify that more than anyone else. We're gonna miss their attitudes, the hard work and passion they bring every day. We just can't replace the type of people they are."

Everyone in the gym couldn't help but smile as they watched Kaitlin O'Brien rack up three kills on her senior day. The defensive specialist actually managed as many kills as she had digs, hearkening back to her days as an outside hitter in club and high school.

Coming into this weekend O'Brien had three total kills this season. Now she finishes the year with seven, which is more than she had the last two years combined.

Becca Branch got out to an incredible start to the match, dominating the attack early on as Winslow dominated it late. Branch chalked up five kills in the first set, helping Eagles to start off on the right foot with a big win in the first game.

Savannah Hilde's whole family came out to support her, including her sweet grandmother from Prescott, Arizona. She put on a show for them all, recording five kills and a block. Her 5.5 points on the afternoon was the third-best performance of the season. She had a great last 24 hours of a career, bringing in eight points with her seven kill effort last night.

Biola trailed just one time in the match, that was when NDNU unexplainably got out to a tremendous start to set number two to take a 5-0 lead. That was quickly erased as BU won eight of the next 11 to tie the match at 8-8.

Winslow and freshman Raegan Tjepkema both had two kills to power those eight points. Aside from that brief struggle to start that game, Biola dominated every aspect of their final match of 2019.

The Eagles' recorded 46 kills to NDNU's 25 and hit .305 for the match. They also posted six aces and were only aced once. Winslow's 15 kills led the team, while Sami Hover paced the service ace effort with her three. Branch also had two.

Vanessa Garcia, who hatched the whole plan to continually set Winslow to ensure she got to 1,000, led the team with 21 assists. She finishes the season as the easy leader in that category for Biola with 591.

Other notables from this last day of the year are Sara Docktor's three kills on five swings (.600) and 18 digs by Sami Hover, lifting her up over 600 digs for the second year in a row. It's the fourth season in a row the Biola libero has topped that plateau.

The Eagles finish the season on a three-game winning streak to clock in at 17-13 for the season and 14-8 in PacWest Conference play. That's sole possession of sixth place in the PacWest.

Congratulations to Sabrina Winslow, Kaitlin O'Brien, Becca Branch and Savannah Hilde and their families for representing Biola so wonderfully.

See ya next season!
