Eagles Stay Close Early

Biola Women’s Basketball stayed close to Cal State Fullerton early and picked up the scoring in the second half.

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball travel to Titan Gym on Saturday afternoon, taking on Cal State Fullerton in the Eagles' second exhibition of the week against an NCAA DI opponent.

The Eagles got off to an exciting start, ending the first quarter within five points on the Titans and drawing with three points at 19-16 after 12 minute of action thanks to seven early points from Tatum Brimley. Brimley finished the game with a team-high 15 points as Biola picked up the scoring in the second half with a total of 32 points after the break.

But Cal State Fullerton never lost its momentum on offense after it got going and shot 53.7 percent from the field on the way to a 84-51 win.

The Eagles had their struggles from beyond the arc in the first half, draining one of their 10 three-point attempts. But Biola made up for it with their work around the painted area. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group equalled the Titans with 28 points in the paint over the course of the game. And the Eagles leveraged eight offensive rebounds, three more than CSUF had, into 11 second half points.

Sophomore Jana Thomas-Reid joined Brimley in the double-figure scoring club with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. And Biola got significant efforts on the boards from Danita Estorga, who lead the team with eight rebounds and three on the offensive glass, followed by Jazz Benn with five rebounds and five points.

Seven different Eagles also dished out assists in the contest and Brimley went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in the second half for Biola.

The Eagles will turn their attention to countable contests and Division II opponents starting next week. Biola will host the PacWest/CCAA Crossover at Chase Gym this coming Friday and Saturday, with the Eagles playing Cal State LA on Friday at 3 p.m.
