Eagles Can't Answer

Biola cannot deal with varied Chaminade attack late, losing in four.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- What's been an overall pretty good week against the Hawaii schools turned sour on Saturday as Biola couldn't get much of anything going against the Chaminade Silverswords. Biola looked great in game two, but was kind of flat in just about everything else, dropping the match in four sets (21-25; 25-17; 15-25; 22-25).

Chaminade's hitters were hammering the ball hard all match long, accumulating at least 13 kills in every set and ending the match playing their best attacking volleyball with 17 kills in the fourth game and a .438 hitting percentage in a runaway game three win.

The Eagles hit .167 for the match, which is right near their season average, but it was not enough to contend on a night when Chaminade's serve-receive played excellent and allowed just one service ace to a Biola team that relies on points at the line and at the net.

Biola had nine blocks in the match, but it was not a significant point of advantage on this day as the team also hit into eight blocks and committed a handful of net violations.

Without their two biggest tools Biola had to rely on the prowess of its attack, which lined up across the likes of Rachel Reedy (17 kills), Emma Tecklenburg (12 kills), Claire Zanon (9 kills) and Alana Handy (6 super heavy kills), proved to not be enough.

Sabrina Winslow led the Biola attack, accumulating 10 kills to hit double-digits for the 12th time this season and 42nd time in her three-year Biola career. She will have a chance to hit 45 such matches with a strong finish in next week's final three home matches.

Abigail Copeland had her best hitting game in a while, adding five kills on a .200 percentage to go along with being in on five of Biola's 10 blocks.

Marissa Price was the go-to for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer when he could work her into the rotation. She served up 21 assists on Saturday, which is the most this year for the redshirt freshman.

Sami Hover came up one dig short of another 20-dig effort, finishing with 19. She was good in serve-receive, committing zero errors and dealing with a Chaminade team that could serve tough.

The first set was a one-point game at 22-21 after a Sabrina Winslow kill capped a run of three out of four points that allowed BU to climb back into it. Unfortunately for the Eagles three points in a row earned by Chaminade (kill, block ace) would end game one in the favor of the visitors to get them started on the right foot in their final match of the SoCal road trip.

Biola immediately shook that off to get off to a 6-1 start to set two behind strong serving from Raegan Tjepkema. The lead would extend to six after a four-point run finished by a Bekah Roth kill made it 11-5. The game remained between three and five points until another four-point run by BU locked things down then a Roth and Copeland block made it 22-15 Biola.

That run and the subsequent set point were the last real positives in the match for the Eagles as Chaminade controlled all of set three and most of set four to work its first and only win in SoCal (1-3).

The win insured Chaminade's season sweep of Biola, both by a 3-1 score line. The Eagles fall to 14-13 (11-8 PacWest) after the loss.

Biola has just one week left in its 2019 season, hosting three home matches on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of next week. The fun begins against Point Loma (18-10; 14-6 PacWest) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
