Biola Volleyball Weekly Notes 10/27 - 11/2

Rivalry Repeat

Biola looks to flush all memory of its home contest against CUI with a win Friday.

October 31, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- This week is a lighter week for Biola Volleyball, with just one match on the schedule. However, it's a key match as BU finishes off its road schedule at Concordia Irvine on Friday night. BU will look to answer back after CUI took the match in three sets in La Mirada earlier this year.

THIS WEEK: at Concordia Irvine (12-9, 6-7 PacWest) - Friday Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.

MULTIMEDIA: Biola offers free live video of all home events at portal.stretchinternet.com/biola. Live statistics will be available at that link and also at https://athletics.biola.edu/sidearmstats/wvball/summary. Road contests also typically have live video and/or live statistics available. BIOLA AT CONCORDIA IRVINE (12-9; 6-7 PacWest): Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ LAST MEETING: CUI defeated Biola, 3-0
Biola is eager for another chance against this 2019 Concordia Irvine Eagles team. The last go-around Biola suffered its most surprising defeat of the year in match that was not even close. It was CUI's best performance of the season, coupled with Biola's least inspired effort of the year. BU is determined to follow a different script this time around. Concordia averaged just over 16 kills-per-set and hit well over .300 in a fantastic offensive effort during the first meeting back on Sept. 28. The Eagles of Irvine had four different players record 11 kills to lead their 49-kill effort, while Biola's leader had eight kills and BU overall had 18 fewer kills than its opponents. Concordia played well all the way around, too, with 52 digs to Biola's 44 and three players recording 10+. After beating Biola, Concordia suffered four losses in a row before recently rattling off wins in three of four against the Northern California schools. CUI's one loss came against Academy of Art, who swept the season series against those Eagles. Biola's had its two best performances of the season again ART U, including a 3-0 win two weeks ago. BU comes into this matchup riding four wins in a row and sitting just two games back of second place in the conference. Concordia features one of the more high profile freshmen in the conference in Mackenzie Jensen. Jensen leads all players in the PacWest with a .391 hitting percentage this season. She's got 152 kills and 70 blocks while raking in three PacWest Freshman of the Week honors. She profiles as very similar to Raegan Tjepkema, who has five more kills and 11 fewer blocks this season.

ABOUT LAST WEEK: Biola made its last out-of-area road trip of the season and picked up wins at Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican. The Eagles dropped one set, but had a relatively smooth weekend with four of their six set wins being with at least a 10-point buffer. Sami Hover was named PacWest Defender of the Week after picking up 48 total digs (6.8/set) and moving into second place in the PacWest in total digs (401). Hover also eclipsed the 1,400 career dig mark this past weekend. She is now 697 away from the school record. Sabrina Winslow moved over 800 career kills with a breakout match against Dominican. She led the team with 15 kills. It was her first time leading the Eagles in kills since the first match against Concordia Irvine (9/28/19).

ROAD WARRIORS: A win on Friday would help Biola finish off its road calendar with an 8-5 mark. The Eagles would preserve a lengthy streak if they can accomplish it. Biola has been at least three games over .500 on the road every season since 2012. Biola has not lost a match AT Concordia Irvine since Oct. 12, 2013.

STREAKING: Biola's current four-match winning streak is the longest it's had all season. If Biola can find a win on Friday they have a chance to link it to at least six matches with Fresno Pacific (3-20; 2-12 PacWest) as its next matchup. Following FPU is the home Cornerstone Cup showdown with Azusa Pacific. Biola has not lost at home to Azusa Pacific since September 2009. The Eagles have lost four of their last six at home against the Sunbirds, but won the two most recent meetings and have not lost at all to FPU since the 2011 season.

IT'S GO TIME: The 2019 Biola Volleyball season has added significance in that it's the Eagles' first as full members in NCAA Division II. Back on July 12 the Biola campus received a call from the NCAA Division II Membership Committee notifying BU of its successful completion of the membership transition process. The change became official as of September 1 and now Biola is officially eligible for NCAA postseason play, national and regional rankings and official NCAA postseason honors for the first time. With no conference tournament, the Eagles will have to finish in the top-8 in the NCAA Division II West Region rankings to be able to get that first taste of NCAA postseason play.

THE ROAD TO 1,100: Biola Volleyball is 1,088-451 (.707) all-time. Biola's averaged 27 wins-per-year in Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's 17-year tenure. This year Biola is on pace for a 15-win season. A good season will put Seltzer within striking distance of 500 when the season is all done. He entered 2019 with an all-time coaching mark of 462-139 (.768).

NEXT WEEK: vs Fresno Pacific (3-20, 2-12 PacWest) - Friday Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.; vs Azusa Pacific (16-4; 10-2 PacWest) - Saturday Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
