Weekly Notes for Women's Soccer October 20 to November 2

Wrap-Around Week

Biola Women’s Soccer carries its 4-0 PacWest record into a stretch of three matches in five days against opponents from Hawaii.

October 24, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif.
--- Biola Women's Soccer picked up six more points in conference play last week as its pushed its winning streak to six matches and finds itself one point behind first place Point Loma as it turns its attention to the three Hawaii programs that will come to Al Barbour Field over the next week. The Eagles have posted some impressive accomplishments as they've found their own in recent matches, including a seven-match shutout streak and two program records for seniors Christina Rodriguez in career shutouts and Madyson Brown in minutes played.

But Biola hasn't achieved those successes with flash or star power, to be honest. It's been all about work-ethic, consistency and a command of the game plan at the team level that has enabled the Eagles to defeat every PacWest opponent they've seen so far. Six women from Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group have recorded game-winners for the Eagles this year while eight student-athletes have recorded at least one assist. And Biola's excellence at intercepting the ball in the midfield and settling possession with the backline has resulted in very impressive defensive statistics that rank the Eagles nationally among NCAA DII programs. Biola's goals against average (0.55) is the best in the PacWest as this week starts and ranks the Eagles 20th in the nation in that category. BU has also limited opposing teams to just 25 shots and two corner kicks in its four conference matches this year while taking 82 shots and 30 corners over the same span.

BIOLA (7-3-1, 4-0 PacWest) vs Hawaii Hilo (3-4-3, 2-1-1 PacWest): Saturday Oct. 26 at 4 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
Biola will start its three match homestand against the Hawaii schools with the Vulcans on Saturday and will look to take the upper-hand in the all-time series that currently stands a 1-1-0 with Hawaii Hilo. The Eagles took the first matchup two years ago with two second half goals at Al Barbour Field. But the Vulcans turned the tables in 2018 with a 2-0 win of their own on the big island on the way to a 7-3-1 PacWest record. This iteration of the Hawaii Hilo women's soccer team will be making its second trip of the year to the mainland after starting the season with two matches in the Bay Area and two in Nampa, Idaho.

The Vulcans have a capable attack, with two women scoring three goals this season and two other women recording at least three assists. But the attack has also been mercurial, as Hawaii Hilo has scored one goal or fewer in six of its 10 matches this season. That's consequently made it difficult for the Vulcans to win matches, as each of their three wins have come when they've scored two goals or more. Hawaii Hilo will come to Biola having taken two 2-0 victories in its last three matches, all played against PacWest opponents, and has allowed just one goal over the last 490 minutes.

The Vulcans went 0-4-1 during their last So Cal PacWest swing two years ago and have not won in Southern California since they defeated San Diego Christian (NAIA) 3-2 in overtime on September 2, 2011. Though the Vulcans are hoping to simply call that ancient history, as UHH went 4-0 on the road in Northern California last year.

BIOLA (7-3-1, 4-0 PacWest) vs Hawaii Pacific (7-3-1, 4-1 PacWest): Monday Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
The Eagles will carry a 2-0-1 all-time record into Monday's matchup with Hawaii Pacific and will apply a lot of their focus toward stopping senior striker Ebony Madrid. Madrid leads the PacWest and is tied for 12th nationally with 13 goals in 11 matches. She's posted two hat tricks already this year, recording both against PacWest opponents, and has six goals in her last four matches even though she went scoreless in Hawaii Pacific's 3-1 win over Dominican this past Monday. Biola has seen Madrid in each of the last two meetings between the teams, holding her scoreless both times and limiting her to one shot during the Sharks' last trip to Al Barbour Field. But HPU's attacks extends beyond Madrid, with seven women scoring goals and a midfielder in Callie Rheaume who has recorded five assists.

The Sharks come to Southern California on a four-match winning streak and with a 4-1 road record. They'll start the trip with a match at Azusa Pacific on Saturday and hope to break an eight-match road losing streak against the members of the PacWest So Cal pod that dates back to 2014. Both the Eagles and Sharks have won each of the last three matches they've played on just one day's rest this season, so expect the teams to still be sharp even after playing on Saturday.

BIOLA (7-3-1, 4-0 PacWest) vs Chaminade (1-3-3, 1-2-1 PacWest): Thursday Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
The Eagles wrap up their five-match home stand with a midweek matchup with the Silverswords, who Biola has defeated in each of the conference meetings the teams have had. Three members of Coach Brunelle's current group have scored goals against Chaminade over the last two years, including forward Madi deMetropolis, who is still pursuing her first goal of the year. Al Barbour Field will be the Silverswords' third stop of four on their Southern California roadtrip, and they'll be going up and down the 5 freeway from Irvine to San Diego on the preceding Saturday and Monday.

Chaminade has scored seven goals in seven matches, with forward Randi Fontes collecting three of those strikes. Three other women have also scored for the Silverswords, who have been shutout in two-straight matches as they fly to the mainland.
