Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

'Swords Too Sharp To Handle

Biola kept it close for 10 minutes, but a cold stretch in the first half leads to loss.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Biola Men's Basketball had to begin its three-game Hawaiian road trip with the toughest opponent of the bunch, No. 18 Chaminade. The Silverswords skill level was evident from start to finish on Thursday evening as they handed the Eagles a 82-58 loss in front of their home crowd.

The game began with a pair of extreme swings as Chaminade scored the first nine points, and then Biola followed that up by scoring the next eight to bring the game back nearly level. The one-point deficit turned into a one-point advantage when BU took a 16-15 lead just over seven minutes into the game.

Right after that, things began to turn south for the Eagles. Biola missed 13 of its next 14 attempts from the floor to help Chaminade open up a double-digit lead heading into the break.

Levi Auble did all he could to keep the Eagles in the game, scoring 13 first-half points on near-perfect shooting. But his effort could only do so much as the Silverswords tacked on quick bursts of points in bunches throughout the half, including scoring the last five points of the half, to go into the locker room with a 41-30 advantage.

Auble was the biggest bright spot of the night for Biola, ending the game with 18 points and shooting 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the line. He added five rebounds and committed no fouls. The 18 points is a new season-best for the senior.

The second half was very similar to the first in that Chaminade scored exactly 41 points again and Biola hovered right around 30. The game also ended with a decent run from Chaminade as they scored the game's final six points and held Biola scoreless over the final two minutes.

The 'Swords ended up with a significant advantage in field goal percentage, shooting 54.1 percent while Biola made just 21 of its 61 attempts (34 percent). The Eagles were also out-rebounded by 12 (40-28).

Biola did manage seven blocks on the night, which is the second-best number of the season. Their leading blocker was not Steve Herve or Alex Talma, but rather Alex Wright, who swatted away four Chaminade chances to score.

The loss drops Biola back under .500 in conference play at 10-9 (6-7 PacWest). Chaminade bounced back nicely from a loss to APU in their last game and improves to 15-4 (9-4 PacWest). They were led by the game's leading scorer, Tyler Cartaino, who had 24 points and eight rebounds on nearly perfect 10-of-12 shooting.

Next up for BU is a Saturday afternoon matchup with Hawaii Pacific (5-13, 2-11 PacWest). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. PT tip-off.
