Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

(Almost) Upset Alert

Biola comes one shot shy of handing #24 Point Loma its first conference loss.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Three weeks ago in San Diego, Biola Men's Basketball managed one good half in a loss at Point Loma. Tonight, in the friendly confines of Chase Gymnasium, the Eagles put together two of their better defensive halves of the season to push the Sea Lions until the final seconds before ultimately falling, 68-65.

"Their effort was very good tonight, especially in the second half," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "If a few things went a little differently, we could have won. The guys played really hard and we definitely improved."

It was somewhat daunting coming into this contest, facing a No. 24 Point Loma team that's rattled off seven consecutive wins and came into the night 11-2 and a perfect 7-0 in PacWest contests.

But, Biola held its own from the very first possession, which was a Trevor Treinen catch-and-shoot three-pointer. Treinen's effort was a big reason the Eagles were able to make this one a game. The senior ended with 12 points and sunk a season-best three three-pointers.

A seven-point run from Point Loma turned the early Biola lead into a quick deficit, but things would level out as the first half wore on. The Point Loma lead wavered between two and seven points all the way until the half was inside of three minutes.

Unfortunately, a four-point play from the Sea Lions' phenom sparked a run late in the half that got PLNU as big as an 11-point lead before halftime. Biola did all it could to keep the game close enough, with Alex Wright making the final bucket before the break and bringing the game to rest at 32-23 PLNU.

That score was one of just two field goals for Wright in the first half. He'd wake up though and go on to be a big reason for Biola's success in half number two. The Eagles were outrebounded by seven in the first half, and PLNU shot 12 percent better helping the visitors feel confident in the locker room.

The Sea Lions turned that confidence into quick points coming out of the break as a Tanner Nelson three-point make extended the game back out to double-digits just 24 seconds into the new half.

Biola would then go on a 9-2 run, finishing with a Treinen layup, to bring the game back to reasonable five-point margin. About four minutes later is when the Eagles could really begin to smell blood in the water as Michael Bagatourian hit a three-pointer (his only one of the night) to bring things back within two for the first time in exactly 20 minutes of play.

Bags had just one point in the first half, but he scored 12 in the second with five of his eight field goal attempts going through the hoop. He led all scorers with those 12 points in the second.

Another Treinen three was followed up by an Alex Wright and-one and three-point play, seeing the Eagles use that six-point swing to take a 45-43 lead with just over 10 minutes to play.

Biola would get the lead back as late as 2:57 left in the game, when Alex Talma scored his only bucket of the night to make it 59-58 BU.

After that, Point Loma would score all 10 of its final points off free throws (shooting 100 percent from the line in the last 2:57) and Biola would manage just one made free throw, one layup and one REALLY DEEP Christian Carroll three-point make and come up just short of victory.

Thanks to the Carroll triple, Biola got the ball back with a chance to tie if they could make a three on the inbounds with 2.8 seconds left. The Eagles' hail mary toss could not quite find the hands of a shooter and the rest is history.

The win pushes Point Loma to 12-2 (8-0 PacWest), while Biola falls to 6-6 (2-4 PacWest). It's a fourth-straight loss for BU, but this was by far the team's best effort in that stretch and should give them confidence headed into a crucial Northern California road trip.

Biola faces Notre Dame de Namur (0-12, 0-6 PacWest) on Saturday.
