Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hawks Spoil Trip Finale

Biola suffers an upset loss to Holy Names to end its long road trip.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball's whirlwind four-game trip through the Northern California PacWest pod came to an unceremonious end on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles suffered a surprise loss at the Holy Names Hawks, 72-58.

It was a tough way to end a road trip where BU's been on top of its game. But, despite the unfortunate loss, the Eagles still end the trip with a 3-1 record and have themselves in a competitive position with a .500 conference record.

Saturday, the Eagles simply could not find their shot with nearly the consistency they had on Thursday. BU shot just 35 percent in the first half, and despite turning things around with some shots falling in half two were already too far out of the game to come back.

Holy Names, fresh off another upset win over Azusa Pacific on Thursday night, came out confident and built a double-digit lead within the first 10 minutes of play on Saturday. They held Biola without a bucket for nearly six whole minutes to turn an early 8-3 Biola lead into a 17-8 HNU advantage.

The hosts ended the first half on a 25-8 run to take a 44-20 lead into the halftime break. The Hawks held Biola without any three-point makes in half one and scored nine threes of their own in the opening 20 minutes. HNU would finish the game with 11 threes, while the Eagles got just one from freshman Alex Wright.

The teams flip-flopped in the second half as Biola went from 35 percent shooting to 58 percent and the Hawks transitioned from their first half mark of 52 percent all the way down to 36. Biola would out-score the Hawks by 10 in half two (38-28), but still ended up 12 points shy.

The three-point shooting ended up being the big difference in this one as the two teams have similar numbers in all the other major categories (FGs, Rebs, Turnovers, FT), but the 10 extra points HNU got with made threes went a long way to getting them the win.

Alex Talma had another strong individual night, ending with a team-high 20 points. Wright was the team's second-leading scorer, finishing with 11 - all of which came in the second half.

Biola falls to 9-7 (5-5 PacWest) following the loss. The team will have almost a whole week to recover from playing four games in eight days and prepare mentally, physically and tactically for its big road rivalry matchup at Azusa Pacific (10-8, 7-4 PacWest) on Saturday, Jan. 19.
