Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Close Call Goes To Cougs

Biola kept it close late into the night, but comes up short against APU.

AZUSA, Calif. --- This one felt much, much more like a bitter rivalry than the last time out. Biola put in a good 40 minutes at Azusa Pacific on Saturday night, but still came up just short as the Cougars shot the ball really well and out-rebounded BU by a decent margin yet again.

The home team rode 12 three-point makes to an 84-72 win to sweep the season series and claim all 10 Cornerstone Cup points.

The first half was a tough one to swallow for the visiting Eagles. The Cougars shot over 60 percent from the field and made it rain from deep in order to build a commanding 43-26 lead at the break.

Things began to shift when after a solid defensive first four minutes, APU came out of the first media timeout with an eight-point run to make it 11-4. The lead continued to grow a few minutes later as the Cougars hit back-to-back transition threes to make it 20-9 with 11 minutes left in the half.

Trevor Treinen did all he could do in the first half trying to keep it close. He completed a pair of and-one plays AND made a flashy fastbreak dunk to work on keeping the Eagles in it mentally. He'd score 10 total in the first to lead all scorers.

What killed Biola in that first frame was the same thing that killed it in the game at Biola - the three. Azusa Pacific scored 21 points from behind the line (7-of-15). The Eagles only attempted two three-point shots in the entire first 20 minutes.

The Cougars also took advantage of having a large lead in rebounding during that first half, out-boarding BU 19-11. Six of those 19 boards were on the offensive end, resulting in 11 second-chance points for the Cougars.

The effort was enhanced in the second half as Biola did all it could to keep up the Cougars (who never really went cold from the field).

Alex Wright played a big role in the Eagles' ability to produce points over the final 20 minutes. The freshman made four three-point shots, which early in the period allowed the Eagles to get as close as within nine points.

He, Levi Auble and Steve Herve accounted for much of the Biola offense from about 10 minutes left until about the eight-minute mark, which is when the game was at its closest at 64-55. It was the unlikeliest of shots to bring it close - a Auble catch-and-shoot three from the top of the arc.

The senior had a solid effort throughout the game, ending up with 13 points on efficient 5-of-9 shooting. It becomes his second-consecutive double-digit effort and fourth of the year.

Even with APU keeping their shooting percentage around 60 percent for the full game, Biola found a way to hang in there late in the second half. Some production from Treinen and Talma brought the game back down to single digits within the final minute, but it was too little, too late for Biola.

A Darien McClain breakaway dunk with seven seconds left put the exclamation point on the win for APU, bringing the game to its final of 84-72 and sending the Cougar faithful home happy.

McClain was the man all night for APU ending the game as the leading scorer with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Talma was the leading man for BU with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Also hitting double digits for the Eagles was Wright (12), Treinen (12) and Auble's 13.

The loss drops Biola to 9-8 (5-6 PacWest) while Azusa Pacific improves to 11-8 (8-4 PacWest). Biola's back at home next week when they host Fresno Pacific (8-8, 5-6 PacWest) on Saturday, Jan. 26.
