Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Talma Perfect, Eagles Soar

Alex Talma does not miss a single shot and Biola didn't miss many in big win.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball has been a around a long, long time (59 years officially, plus some extra before records were kept), but rarely has it seen a shooting night as good as Dr. Dave Holmquist's men put out on Thursday night up north.

On their way to a 75-66 PacWest Conference win over the Dominican Penguins, Biola shooters went 30-of-47 from the floor to shoot .638 overall. It's the best shooting percentage by any Biola team since the school record was set in a 138-105 win over Redlands back on Nov. 25, 2006. That Eagles team went an incredible 60-of-84 (.714) from the floor and had six guys score in double digits.

Tonight, the standouts were Alex Talma and Trevor Treinen. Talma went 10-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the line to end up with 23 points in 25 minutes. Talma's 10-for-10 performance is historic in the PacWest. It's third-most FGs without a miss in conference history and the best effort since Hawaii Hilo's Vandyon Lockett set the conference mark with a 12-for-12 effort in 2016.

Treinen was the driving force behind Biola's ability to runaway with the game in the second half after trailing by three at halftime. He scored 26 total points, getting 16 of those on a 6-of-7 effort in the second half. It was his second 20-point game in a row.

Neither team could steal away the momentum completely in a back-and-forth first half. No team led by more than five points at any one point, and Dominican used a seven-point run with just over two minutes left in the half to take over the lead and ride a narrow advantage (32-29) into the break.

The hosts managed to hold onto that lead for a little over five minutes to start the second half before the first of two big Biola runs allowed the Eagles to take over the top spot. Biola was down 38-35 before it rattled off three buckets in a row to take a 41-38 lead with 14:26 to play. That was a part of a larger 15-4 run that would open up the largest lead of the game for either team at 50-42 Biola.

Then the Eagles' hot shooting kicked up a notch (72 percent in the second half) and the Penguins could not keep up, never again getting closer than a four-point deficit.

The Eagles' final big run of the game came in the closing minutes as they outscored the Penguins 15-7 from the 5:10 mark until there were just 16 seconds left in the game. Treinen and Talma accounted for all but two of those final 15 points.

Aside from the brilliant shooting, it was another all-around good game for the Eagles. They played sound defense throughout - limiting their opponents to fewer than 34 points in both halves and also won the rebounding battle (29-25). Twenty-four of the Eagles' 29 rebounds were on the defensive end, limiting second-chance opportunities for DUC.

The one negative is that Biola once again was bit by the turnover bug, coughing up the rock 16 times on the night. The good thing for the Eagles is that it only equated to 17 points off turnover for the Penguins, which matched the amount of points off turnovers BU scored, essentially offsetting the damage.

Treinen (26) and Talma (23) were, of course, the team leaders in scoring. Biola also got contributions from Michael Bagatourian (8), Alex Wright (7) and Levi Auble added seven as the only player to score off the bench.

The win helps Biola improve to 9-6 overall and 5-4 in PacWest play. The Eagles are 3-0 through the first three of their four games during this road trip. The three-consecutive wins has Biola holding steady in sixth place in the conference standings.

They travel to Oakland to play Holy Names (5-10, 4-6 PacWest) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Hawks are coming off a major upset win over Azusa Pacific (85-71) at home on Thursday night.
