Otters Will Not Fall

Biola takes eight shots-on-goal and controls the second half but cannot score in a 1-0 loss to CSU Monterey Bay.

SEASIDE, Calif. --- Despite controlling play for much of the second half and taking eight shots-on-goal on Saturday, the Biola Eagles had to drive away from Cal State Monterey Bay empty handed, dropping the match 1-0.

Both Sarah Jeffries and Sandy Hawryla produced three shots-on-goal in the match and Biola's two keepers combined to make four saves. But a goal from the Otters 27 minutes into the match ended up standing uncontested and resulted in Biola's second road loss of the season.

"We had a tough result after a tremendous second half of play," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "We started and ended the first half well, but had a lapse in play which resulted in a goal against. We created one or two decent chances in the first half, but nothing too dangerous."

While Biola was still trying to gather itself in the first half, CSUMB managed to thread a ball through the Biola defense in the 27th minute to Sierra Levy for a tap-in goal. The Otters had the statistical advantage in offense with seven first-half shots to two and five corners to none. But the tide of the match started to turn in Biola's favor when Sandy Hawryla forced Stephanie Busch to make a save in the moments before halftime.

"The ladies had an excellent response in the second half to what was discussed at the break. Sandy Hawryla and Sierra Miller dominated the right flank and were serving up platters for someone to finish," said Brunelle. "We are lacking composure in the box to reward ourselves for all of the work done to build into the attack. We will continue to empower our ladies with the confidence needed to put the ball in the back of the net and take control of games."

All six of Biola's shots in the second half needed to be met by saves from the Otters. Sarah Jeffries opened up the half with goal-scoring chances in the 50th and 56th minute, while Madi DeMetropolis continued her strong return to the lineup with a go at goal in the 87th minute that nearly crossed the goal line because Busch was out position.

Unfortunately, the Eagles' efforts to finish just would not come to fruition on Saturday and they'll have to look for their second win at Al Barbour Field next Saturday night.

"We have continued to challenge this young group to play with grit and passion each and every moment. They are learning each game what it takes to play at this level, but our inexperience is showing," said Brunelle. "We have a tough opponent coming next week in Seattle Pacific, but I'm looking forward to our next test."

Kickoff with the Falcons is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
