Alvarez First Player of the Week

Annmarie Alvarez becomes the first Player of the Week for the PacWest Conference in the 2018 season.

September 03, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior forward Annmarie Alvarez was named PacWest Women's Soccer Player of the Week on Monday after leading the conference in goals and points through the first week of the season. The Los Alamitos, California native was the only PacWest women's soccer student-athlete to score two goals during the first week and delivered them both during Biola's overtime victory over CSU Dominguez Hills.

Madyson Brown and Colie Martin both earned Defender of the Week honors in 2017, but Alvarez' recognition today marks the first time a Biola women's soccer student-athlete has been chosen for PacWest Player of the Week.

Alvarez scored the first goal of Biola's season last Thursday after chasing down a forward pass from the aforementioned Martin in the eighth minute of the Eagles' match with the Toros. Alvarez used a burst of speed to create seperation from the chasing defenders and then beat the keeper one-v-one to give Biola the early 1-0 lead.

Then Alvarez delivered again nearly 90 minutes later when Sarah Jeffries launches a cross into the box for Alvarez to finish for the golden goal and the 2-1 win. The nursing major ended play on Thursday having scored three goals over her last two matches for Biola, as she scored the second goal of Biola's 4-0 victory in the NCCAA National Championship game last December.

The Eagles have two road matches ahead of them this week, traveling to CSU San Marcos on Thursday for an afternoon match before trekking up to Monterey Bay for a matchup with the CSUMB Otters at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
