CUI’s Gordon Continues Tear

Biola falls to Concordia University Irvine after forward Connor Gordon scores his fourth and fifth goals of the week.

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles found a burst in the closing moments of their final non-conference match of the year, scoring a late goal to bring things closer against Concordia on Saturday afternoon.

But Connor Gordon's contribution to the home team would be too much for Biola to overcome. The senior forward scored his fourth and fifth goals of the week before assisting on another in the 90th minute to help Concordia take the match by a final score of 4-1.

It took Biola about 60 minutes to get the offense going on Saturday because of Concordia's pressure and ability to cut off the red birds' forward passes. Defender Jake Munivez produced the Eagles' first shot-on-goal in the 60th minute on a header in the aftermath of a corner kick by Henry Reeves.

Then Biola had another surge in threats at the 83-minute mark, when Head Coach Todd Elkins' team took three corner kicks and two shots leading up to their first goal of the match in the 86th minute.

Biola got in the board in feel-good fashion, as third-year forward Hunter Finnegan got on the end of an Aaron Caeg ball and put it past the keeper for his first goal as an Eagle. Finnegan's goal brought Biola within two goals with four minutes to play and marks the fourth-time this year that a men's soccer student-athlete has scored his first goal as an Eagle. Oscar Rubalcava, Gilbert Sotelo and Leo Thompson are the other members of Finnegan's team to accomplish that feat this season.

Unfortunately, Gordon and Concordia would not tolerate any ideas of a later comeback for Biola. After scoring the first and third goal of the match for Concordia, Gordon fed a ball toward the top-left corner of the penalty area to set Jafet Sanchez up to put the match to bed with the fourth score of the day for the home side.

Biola will get to face Concordia again in just two weeks when CUI comes to Al Barbour Field for a contest that actually counts toward each team's PacWest record. In the meantime, the Eagles will travel to Northern California next week to open up their conference schedule with fixtures against Academy of Art on Thursday and Notre Dame De Namur next Saturday.
