Eagles Open With A Win

Biola wins the first match of its PacWest schedule on Thursday after defeating Academy of Art 2-0 in San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO --- The Biola Eagles started conference play on a good note Thursday, picking up three point to start their PacWest slate by defeating Academy of Art, 2-0.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' team pulled out the victory by making the most out of the few scoring opportunities it got in the first half. While the defense withstood two corners and two shots-on goal-in the first half, the Eagles' attack only needed one shot-on-goal to take the lead midway through the opening period. Captain Kousei Mattox took a set-piece shot from 25 yards out that glanced off the far post and in to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Mattox' second goal of the year was followed by starts and stops from both teams with fouls and offsides. But then Mattox stepped over the ball over early in the second half with the intent of increasing the Eagles' lead and found Jack MacDonald in the box to make it a 2-0 match.

It was the second time in the match that Mattox set up a Biola goal from 25 yards out, swinging the ball to MacDonald where there was space at the far post. It was MacDonald's first goal of the season and the first of his career with Biola, making him the fifth Eagle in 2018 to score his first goal for Head Coach Todd Elkins' team.

On the defensive end of the pitch, Biola limited the Urban Knights to two shots-on-goal in the first 22 minutes of the match and shut the door on the goal thereafter. Luis Rodriguez and the Eagles' backline recorded their second shutout of the season by taking care of business when they needed to.

But they were helped in large part by the aggressiveness of the Eagles' offense, which continued to press the ball up the field throughout the match. Biola was charged with six offsides and created three corner kick chances in the second half alone to keep distance between the ball and their goal.

Academy of Art's final shot of the first half came in the 40th minute and the Urban Knights would not produce another attempt at a goal for the rest of the match. The win put Biola's record in PacWest play at 1-0 and drops Academy of Art to 0-2-1 in conference.

The Eagles have a day to recover before heading to Belmont, California for a matchup with Notre Dame De Namur. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 noon.
