Tide Turns Before Halftime

Point Loma’s two goals before halftime help it pull ahead in its non-conference match with Biola.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles had a particular strategic approach to Wednesday's match against Point Loma at Al Barbour Field. Though the opponents shared a conference affiliation, Wednesday's matchup did not count toward their PacWest record, so Head Coach Todd Elkins elected to rest some of his players and go deep into his reserves.

The Eagles were thinking ahead to their actual PacWest matchup with the Sea Lions coming in early October and did not want to show everything they had in their hand.

Point Loma obliged to Biola's forward thinking and quickly scored a goal in the first two minutes for an early lead. The Eagles stepped up to challenge the Sea Lions thereafter, getting back-to-back saves from Luis Rodriguez in the 14th minute and creating two corner kick chances to try to even things up.

The Sea Lions didn't have a shot on goal for almost 30 minutes after Rodriguez' saves because of how well the Eagles were keeping up defensively and clearing the ball. But PLNU kept coming and created a breakaway opportunity on a through ball that awarded them a penalty kick in the 42nd minute.

Forward Indiana Fuller put the penalty away and then quickly got another goal when Point Loma repossessed the ball and saw Paul Sweet cross the ball into Fuller in the penalty area. That minute, two-second flury turned the match on its head as the 35 minutes or so that preceded the goals gave the sense that the Eagles may be able to hold on and tie the score.

The second half of play was more defensive as Point Loma's pressure adequately countered Biola's effort to move the ball forward. Leo Thompson recorded the only shot-on-goal for the Eagles in the 79th minutes, a try from 25 yards out that Wiktor Lasota was able to handle. And despite Thompson's urging toward his team to push because of their deficit, Fuller was able to score again shortly after to earn a hat trick.

The Eagles will look to turn things around on Saturday when they travel to Irvine to face Concordia.
