Point Loma comes to Al Barbour Field having won three matches in a row by a score of 1-0 behind excellent defense. The Sea Lions have limited their opponents to just 35 shots in four matches and have only asked keeper Emma Hinson to face 10 shots-on-goal over that same span. They are already 2-0 on the road this year, having traveled to Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Marcos two weeks ago but the Eagles defeated Point Loma at Al Barbour Field a year ago and it seems likely that a similar style of play can deliver an identical result on Wednesday. When Biola earned a 1-0 shutout last October because they were able to break through for an early goal and beat the Sea Lions at their own defensive goal. The Eagles withstood two shots-on-goal and two corner kicks over the first five minutes and then turned the tables when Sarah Jeffries got Biola on the board in the ninth minute. Biola then followed the goal by limiting Point Loma to two shots-on-goal and zero corner kicks the rest of the match. Getting off to a quick start on offense will be key again on Wednesday to prevent the Sea Lions from settling in and setting the pace of the match. Point Loma has allowed two shots or fewer in the first half of their last three matches, all of which have resulted in shutouts.

Concordia enters this week looking to shake off the difficulties it has had at home to begin the season. All three of CUI's losses this season have come at home, with the Eagles on the losing end of a 2-1 score. Concordia lost its season opener against a well-regarded UC San Diego side despite taking a 1-0 lead just before halftime. Then CUI suffered back-to-back losses to Sonoma State and Cal Poly Pomona after both visiting teams scored early goals. But Concordia will quickly recall that it scheduled very good CCAA opponents in order to prepare for conference opponents, as those three losses game against teams who have a combined recorded of 14-2-3 this season. CUI also has also seen five student-athletes score goals for their team this season, so Biola will have to treat anyone who is on the ball like a scoring threat. The red birds will be Concordia's second home match of the week as CUI kicks off conference play against Fresno Pacific on Thursday in Irvine.

ABOUT LAST WEEK:
Biola made the most of what it got on offense in last week's match against Seattle Pacific and stepped up big time on defense to make one goal work for a victory against a previously undefeated opponent. The Eagles did not take a shot in the second half against the Falcons and only produced one shot-on-goal. But Sarah Jeffries' lob to the far-left post in the 10th minute was all Biola needed, as it carried over the SPU keeper's head and tucked inside the post for a goal. Then the Eagles' defense locked down in the 80 minutes that followed, with Viviana Poli taking center stage because of some great saves. Centerbacks Alyssa Chavez and Devin Gooch took control of the area directly above goal and allowed Colie Martin and Aubrey Fergeson to turn on the afterburners down the sidelines with regularity. And at the same time, Poli cleaned up when she was called up with big saves that kept the Falcons in constant catch-up mode. Poli was named PacWest Defender of the Week and NCCAA Defender of the Week on Monday for collecting six saves and getting her first clean sheet of her collegiate career.

ONE WAY OR THE OTHER:
Since the beginning of the 2016 season, the results of Biola women's soccer matches have followed a pretty straight-forward pattern. When the Eagles score, they do not lose. In 46 matches since the start of the 2016 campaign, the Eagles are 34-0-4 when they score at least one goal and are 2-0-1 this season in that scenario, including their 1-0 win over Seattle Pacific last Saturday. The last time Biola scored a goal and lost a match was Nov. 30, 2015 when the Eagles lost 2-1 in the NAIA National Tournament second round to Mobile (AL). And even that defeat was the only time that season when Biola lost after scoring a goal.


CONFERENCE TICKER:
Although the Eagles will not play matches that count toward their PacWest record this week, conference matches started in earnest on Monday and will continue through Saturday. Preseason favorite Fresno Pacific bounced back from a four-match losing streak by earning the first three points of conference play on Monday. Sunbird Rachel Anderson's first goal of the season helped Fresno Pacific end Academy of Art's five-match winning streak and drops them to 0-1 in PacWest play. The Sunbirds will play their second conference match on Thursday at Concordia while Azusa Pacific matches up with Chaminade in Hawaii. Following those matches, four more conference contests will be played before the Eagles travel to San Francisco to play in their first PacWest match.
