Biola begins its busy two weeks with its toughest test of the first few weeks of PacWest Conference play. The Eagles hit the road to face a Sea Lions' team that is 6-0 in PacWest sets in 2018 and was picked to finish fifth in the 2018 PacWest Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. Point Loma has wins over Academy of Art and Holy Names, who happen to be the Eagles' opponents later in this week of road competition. The host team comes into play having won four in a row after beginning the year 1-4. Cara Keturakis is the star player for PLNU, having won PacWest Player of the Week on opening week and leading the conference with 324 assists. The junior setter also leads all current conference setters in career assists with 2,395. These two teams split the season series last year with Biola losing in five at home and PLNU losing in four in the matchup inside Golden Gymnasium. All-time, Biola holds a 42-32 advantage in the series, including an 18-22 mark when playing on the road vs. Point Loma. Sabrina Winslow was the Eagles' top player in their 3-1 win over Point Loma last season, she set a season-best with 21 kills and 14 digs in that match. Point Loma Ticketing Information.

After their trip to San Diego the Eagles head up to Northern California for the first time this season. BU will begin its journey up north with a Friday night matchup with Academy of Art. The Urban Knights are still winless to this point of the season and have just one match (vs. Holy Names on Wednesday) between now and their matchup with the Eagles. BU has a 1-0 record all-time against ART U, with the two teams' only meeting coming last season in Biola's inaugural PacWest campaign. The Eagles won in three sets up north last season with Karly Dantuma's 10 kills leading the Biola effort on that night. NOTE: This match will be played at Dominican University California in San Rafael, California. Academy of Art Ticketing Information.

Biola's final test of the week comes in the form of the Holy Names Hawks. It will also be HNU's third match of the week, having played Academy of Art on Wednesday, Concordia Irvine on Friday and finishing up with the Eagles in a Saturday afternoon getaway game. Biola has never lost to Holy Names, compiling a perfect 7-0 record in its seven attempts, including a 2-0 mark (by two sweeps) one year ago. Four of the six sets between these two sides in 2017 ended with Biola winning 25-11 or better. Biola outhit the Hawks .342 to -.025 in their first match and .403 to .033 in the second match. They out-blocked the Hawks 11-5 and had 12 aces to the Hawks' five in a pair of dominant effort. Stephanie Jewett led the Eagles with seven kills in the second matchup, which was Biola's 10th PacWest win of the season in 2017. This is just the second time Biola has played Holy Names up in Belmont, with the only other road meeting coming last year. Holy Names Ticketing Information.
ABOUT LAST WEEK: It was a mellow week for the Eagles to open PacWest Conference play. Their only matchup was Saturday's home contest against the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds. Biola took care of FPU in straight sets (25-20; 25-18; 25-16) led by dominant efforts from its middle blockers
Sierra Bauder (9 kills, .533%, 3 blocks) and
Bekah Roth (6 kills, 2 aces, 4 blocks). Biola is one of
six undefeated conference teams after the first week, including one of three sitting at 3-0.
ROAD TO 1,000 (AND THEN SOME): Senior opposite hitter
Karly Dantuma comes in sitting on 975 career kills. She's is a major player in the Biola offense this year and should be able to cross the 1,000 career kill plateau within the first third of the season (potentially this week). If she can hit the mark, she'd be just the
15th student-athlete in the 50-year history of the program to reach it. Dantuma is blocking at the best rate of her career right now and has a chance to eclipse 300 career blocks (247). If she does that she'd be just the fourth player in Biola history to have 1,000+ kills and 300+ blocks (Becky Miller, Amy Weststeyn, Michelle Warkentin).
SELTZER'S SEVENTEENTH: Seltzer is in his 17th season at the helm of the BU Volleyball squad. He's the winningest coach in program history with an all-time mark of 437-136 (.763). With last week's win over Fresno Pacific he extended a streak to 12-consecutive wins (back to 2007) in conference-openers. He helped this team make an immediate impression in its first NCAA Division II season by leading the Eagles to a 28-7 overall mark in 2017, which would've been good enough to qualify Biola for the NCAA West Region Championship, if the Eagles were postseason eligible. Volleyball was the only program at Biola that would've qualified in 2017-18.
ROAD WARRIORS: Biola is 7-3 in conference road matches during its tenure in the PacWest Conference. The difference between that 7-3 mark and a 10-0 mark is incredibly slim as all three of those road losses were in five sets (
APU,
HPU,
CBU). This week Biola will look to improve that mark with its first three conference road matches of the year. It could be a tall order as last week conference road teams were a combined 0-11 (including 10 3-0 losses).
YOU BEKAH BELIEVE IT: Biola continues to lead the PacWest with 48 service aces in 2018. The Eagles are averaging 1.55/set, which is third behind just Chaminade and Hawaii Hilo. They had a season-best 11 last time out vs. FPU, including two from sophomore
Bekah Roth. Roth holds the individual lead in aces with 15, which ranks 74th in all of NCAA Division II. Roth is having a breakout season as she's also top-5 in the conference in blocks (32) and top-10 in hitting percentage (.292).
CLEANING THINGS UP: The last two times out have been good times for Biola as its earned its first two 3-0 wins of the season. Those victories were made possible by the Eagles' two most unblemished attacking efforts of the season. Biola had seven attack errors vs. Sonoma State two matches back and 12 against FPU last week to post its two lowest tallies of the season in that category. The Eagles are now hitting .225 as a team, which is fourth-best in the conference. Biola's first opponent of the week, Point Loma, is right on Biola's heels in fifth with a .195 mark. PLNU has played two more sets than Biola on the season and has 43 more kills and 37 more attack errors.
BRING BACK THE BLOCK: Biola recorded double-digit team blocks in each of its first three matches of the season. The Eagles have not hit that mark since that opening weekend and will look to achieve it once again this week. Biola still sits third in the conference in total blocks and is actually the best team in the PacWest at not hitting into the block. Biola's three opponents this week rank fifth (HNU), sixth (PLNU) and 11th (ART U) at blocks against.
NEXT WEEK: vs
Chaminade (9/17 at 7:00 p.m.); vs
Hawaii Hilo (9/20 at 7:00 p.m.); vs
Hawaii Pacific (9/22 at 7:00 p.m.)
