Biola loses the back-and-forth with Cal State LA in the Eagles’ first road match of the season.

LOS ANGELES --- There was not much room for error in the Biola Eagles match with Cal State LA on Saturday night. As a team, the Eagles played a much cleaner match on defense and Viviana Poli was excellent in goal when called upon for saves. But two similar scoring chances broken two different ways for both sides and left the Eagles' with the short end of the stick in a 1-0 match.

Cal State LA came into tonight's matchup on the heels of a 2-0 win over Azusa Pacific on Thursday and coming off of a high-ranking in the CCAA Preseason Poll released the previous week. The Golden Eagles were placed third in the CCAA after finishing second a year ago and returning a dangerous scorer in Paulina Chaidez and it just so happens that Chaidez found herself in the right spot to be the difference in this match.

Eleven minutes into the match, CSULA midfielder Irma Pinzon centered a ball for Madison Mader to fire at goal. Poli made an excellent diving stab at the ball, but Chaidez poked the rebound back into the net to give her team the 1-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles had few if any clear chances to score the rest of the match. Poli made seven saves the rest of the match, including another great diving stop in the fallout of a corner kick in the 51st minute, while the defense kept the home team from making passes into the 18-yard box. But Cal State LA's defense matched that feat at nearly every turn and earned their second-straight shutout to begin its season.

Biola's best chance came two minutes into the second half, when defender Colie Martin found found the ball at here feet in the keeper's area and an opening toward goal. Unfortunately for the Eagles, CSULA's Pinzon blocked the ball on the goal line to send it away and maintain the lead for her team.

Martin and Annmarie Alvarez would take the other two shots-on-goal the Eagles would have in the second half of the loss. But this match represents a marked improvement in efficiency and command of the team-system for a side that played a quality opponent.

The Eagles will attempt to flip the script and continue to come into form for PacWest play when they travel to San Marcos on Thursday. Biola kicks off with the Cougars at 2:00 p.m.
