Eagles Complete Final Tuneup

Biola gives a hefty amount of playing time to new players and runs through its system in its final exhibition.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola women's soccer team completed its final preseason walk-through on Monday, complete with full pre-match preparations, game-management staffing and a large number of supporters.

The Eagles took on Hope International in a match that was classified as an exhibition for both teams and got several promising performances from its freshman class as the side ironed out its playing system one last time before playing a countable match on Thursday.

The Royals found a few holes in the Eagles defensive third in the middle portion of the game, scoring four goals as a result from the 28-minute mark to the 48-minute mark. But Biola walked away having limited HIU to one errant shot in the final 30 minutes of the match while it rotated its roster into the match and took a game-high 16 shots in the contest.

The Al Barbour faithful also got to see Head Coach Erin Brunelle's incoming recruiting class for the first time and saw a lot of encouraging signs. Aubrey Fergeson got the start at outside back opposite Colie Martin and demonstrated a physicality and secondary burst down the sideline that showed the freshman will be able to keep up with PacWest opponents and make the Eagles dangerous down both flanks.

Lindsay Gerle and Katelyn Penner also appeared in the starting XI for Biola and consistently made first steps to challenge the ball to win possession back for the Eagles. Kavitha George and Rachel Melvin were also consistent and dependable in their time as substitutes on Monday, with George making strong strides to create space for the ball at her feet and Melvin showing great field vision and an ability to take calculated paths to intercept opponents.

Strong contributors from 2017 also had an imprint on the match and indicated they'll be ready to fill their roles again this season. Colie Martin made a number of runs down the sideline against the Royals and took three shots while playing the full 90 minutes. Sarah Jeffries also execute her patented runs to the endline and created several dangerous chances for Biola with crosses in front of the goal.

Throughout the match it also became evident that the Eagles will have a lot of options at forward coming into the season. In addition to George and Jeffries, Ell Tinsley and Annmarie Alvarez put their own pressure on the Royal defenders by challenging them to foot races toward balls traveling to open space. Sarah Yang also played a strong 70 minutes on Monday and was frequently found around the ball in the Royals third when Biola got close to breaking through.

Biola will have two more days of practice to fine tune its system before opening its season with a home match against CSU Dominguez Hills on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
