Second Match Stumble

Biola Volleyball has a minor setback with a 3-1 loss to CSUMB.

NAMPA, Idaho --- Day one of the 2018 Biola Volleyball season had some ups and had some downs, but at the end of the day it's all good, because we're playing actual volleyball for the first time since December.

The Eagles' nightcap was spoiled by the Otters of CSU Monterey Bay who completed an undefeated day by beating Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's team, 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 21-25, 21-25).

Both teams had nearly identical numbers in the first set, hitting around .235 with around 14 kills and 5 errors. Biola got off to the better start, leading 15-10 before Monterey Bay won 16 of the final 25 points to steal the set.

The second set was the Eagles' best of the match and CSUMB's worst. Biola hit almost .500 and benefitted from five blocks to put the Otters away and win their only set of the match. Sabrina Winslow was rolling on all cylinders through the first two sets. She paced Biola's attack with eight kills and no errors (hitting .471).

Set three was definitely the most interesting game of the whole day. CSUMB was playing their best volleyball of the day and Biola had a hard time dealing with their serves. It all accounted for a 16-4 start to the set in favor of the Otters.

However, some big blocks, well-timed setter attacks and pretty good serving helped the Eagles pull all the way back within three at 23-20. Biola would fend off one set point at 24-20, but a kill from CSUMB ended things in their favor and gave them a big 2-1 advantage in the match.

It looked like the Eagles were on their way to forcing their second five-set match of the afternoon when they continued to block well and worked an 18-14 lead in the fourth set. However, the Otters managed four straight points to tie things up and force the issue. CSUMB reeled off seven of the next 10 points to lock up the match. They ended things with their 11th ace of the night.

Karly Dantuma had a solid attacking night, ending with 11 kills and hitting .360. She was also in on four of the Eagles' 10 blocks.

The loss drops Biola to 1-1 on the season headed into the final day of the opening tournament. Up next for the Eagles is a matchup with No. 19 Northwest Nazarene (1-1).
