Women's Soccer Preseason Poll Release

Biola Lands in the Fifth Spot

The Eagles have their eyes set on exceeding expectations for the second-straight year after they were picked to finish fifth in conference.

August 22, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The PacWest office released its third and final coaches' poll ahead of the fall season on Wednesday, ranking the 12 women's soccer team still remaining in the conference after the departure of California Baptist and Dixie State.

Conference coaches ranked the Biola Eagles fifth out of the 12 teams after the Eagles went 8-3-2 in PacWest play and went on to win an NCCAA National Championship a year ago. Last year's surprise second-place finisher Fresno Pacific was tabbed as the preseason favorite with four first-place votes and 126 points. The Sunbirds were followed by Azusa Pacific, Concordia and Point Loma.

The Eagles recorded a 8-2-1 record last year against the conference opponents they'll face this season and are the only side in the PacWest that is coming off a season in which it recorded 10 or more wins overall. In 2018, Biola will have the fortune of playing each of the top-three ranked teams at Al Barbour Field, where it went 9-0-1 a year ago and finished off the regular season at home with a 1-0 shutout of Point Loma.

Concordia will travel to La Mirada first on Oct. 6, followed by Fresno Pacific on Oct. 20 and then Azusa Pacific for a Cornerstone Cup matchup on Oct. 27.

The Eagles lost five starters when the team graduated eight seniors in the 2017-18 year. But Biola returns a number of key players who helped the side build an eight-match shutout streak to end the season. That collection of student-athletes includes defender Colie Martin, who was named to the Preseason All-PacWest team that was also released on Wednesday.

Martin also earned third team All-PacWest honors last year after she started all 22 matches for the Eagles and played every minute of Biola's final 11 PacWest contests. Martin figures to bring the same brand of speed and competitiveness that made her a tough test on defensive and a threat in the attack.

After an exhibition at Al Barbour Field against Hope International on Monday Aug. 27, Biola officially opens the regular season on Wednesday Aug. 30 at home versus CSU Dominguez Hills. The Eagles will start their PacWest schedule on the road in Northern California and will play five of their first six conference contests away from Biola because of a three-match road trip to the Hawaii schools from Oct. 11 to Oct. 16.
